email verification with email a link

I want to auto-generate an email with a verification link -- on creation of a new user. The type that has a long, rather cryptic looking hyperlink which when clicked, validates the account. Any ideas? Something with a fair amount of security and non-intuitive would be great.

i've worked on something similar a few summers ago. read up on SMTP validation.
