In disbelief, I re-read the
CPOL, which I of course read quite a while ago and — surprisingly or not — I did not find a single case where the word "profit" occurs.
At the same time, the present-time SPOL version says:
You agree not to sell, lease, or rent any part of the Work. This does not restrict
you from including the Work or any part of the Work inside a larger software
distribution that itself is being sold. The Work by itself, though, cannot be sold,
leased or rented.
In other words, you can use the work in commercial products which you can cell for for profit.
It looks like the restriction you mentioned is just your fantasy; perhaps you need to learn paying more attention for what you read. :-)
