Doing the Java update on my work PC (I won't let it anyway near my own machines) I noticed again Oracle's claim that "3 billion devices run Java".

I call BS.

I suspect most of those are things like older feature phones that are now languishing in a bin somewhere.

Not really, for some arcane reason many tv, dvd players and digital TV receivers have the firmware written in java.

My words, really. I had a digital TV receiver that took 20 friggin minutes to boot. And crashed a lot. I hated it until the day it literally crashed. Me dad's less patience than me.

They must be including all the scripted ads and older PC version Minecraft. That would get the number up there.

It was broke, so I fixed it.

Many (all?) SIM cards and "smart" cards are programmed with Java.

I'd say its entirely possible.

It's funny as when these stories were published weekly they use to bore me and I'll never read them. Now they go to the trouble of getting an injunction I just have to find out.
