Nope: there are times when I can't hear what is being said. Or at least when I don't want to hear what is being said...

You can't hear? or you just ignore it?
My father has "hearing-helpers" (sonotone?) and always says the same, it is an advantage... he can always use the "sorry I forgot to change the battery and can't hear you well... what have you said?", after the 3rd time people usually desists

You know, expert and researchers are both different, which one do you want actually? Would some speaker work out?

Could someone recommend a decent free mp4 converter? Just need to convert mp4 (taken with a Lumia 920) to another format that's editable in Windows Movie Maker. Thank you.

I use Freemake Video Converter[^] to convert to MP4 (as that's my Chromecast's prefered format), or HandBrake[^] which works, but prefers M4V to MP4 output, and seems to lose a little clarity when Freemake doesn't.
Both of them accept MP4 and can produce a whole load of different output formats.

Have you posted it in the "free tools forum"? It looks good

You can also have a look at Avidemux.

FFMpeg?
Command line by default, although I do know there are some GUIs for it. Supports pretty much everything under the sun in terms of media formats.
You can get Windows builds at this page[^].

Found a program called MP4Cam2AVI Easy Converter[^]
Most of the time when converting from one format to another you will lose quality, but this claims to just make it compatible for the type of editing you want to do without re-encoding, so no quality loss and it should be quicker as well.

My father in law is complaining about it being a bit intrincate and doesn't like it so much. Do you know an alternative for editing not just converting?

Nothing else that's free, and also easier to use than WMM. There are non-free video editing software options available (decent ones under $100).

Like here: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegassoftware[^]
"Movie Studio" versions from a little under to a little over $100 on the second row.
Then when you find out you really like movie-making and really like Vegas, you can get one of the ones at the top of the page.

Have you tried VLC?
It'll play nearly anything and can convert between formats too.
Otherwise, I use Handbrake like Griff does.

Interesting. Didn't know VLC had conversion support. Thanks.

You're welcome. I forgot to add - it's all done with software, unlike some which use your gpu. Handbrake can use it for both the decode and encode operations. (But it wont run on the Raspberry Pi)
