If you wanted to buy a thumb drive today, where would you go in order to...
- [A] Maximize your convenience
- [B] Minimize your cost

I went to JB-Hifi the other day and bought a 500Gb SSD with USB- A, B and C connector cables. Very happy about that!
The drive is also very small, credit card sized.
Cost about ~ AU$ 100.

Cool story bro.
Now, about that thumb drive...

what's the difference between a thumbdrive and a portable usb ssd? does a thumbsized device shape factor really matter?

Last I read, there is an actual difference between the two. Since neither have moving parts, they often get lumped together.

The original question was:
Quote: you wanted to buy a thumb drive today, where would you go in order to...
•[A] Maximize your convenience
•[B] Minimize your cost
You recommend store XYZ because of their SSD prices. It could have great prices on SSDs, but their thumb drives could be overpriced. Have you answered the original question?

yes.
as far as I understand it a thumb drive is a small portable storage. the shape format does not matter except being small. and that's exactly what I was talking about.
And I found this item excellent value for money to boot.

So, unless I'm missing something, you're saying a thumbdrive is, for all intents and purposes, interchangeable with an external SSD.
Consider that a thumbdrive is small enough to put in your pockets and carry around with you everywhere you go. An external SSD, not so much.
Different devices for different purposes.

this SSD is credit card sized! and about 4 mm thick! this slide easily in the pocket or in the wallet!
though, to be fair, it also need the connecting cable.... but it ain't much of a drag. and it's a 500GB SSD!

Show me someone carrying an SSD on a keychain and I'll shut up.
I've lost numerous thumbdrives and haven't cared too much in any instance; they're disposable at this point in time. SSDs? Not so much.

(time is money)
Probably online of a local store after checking availability or ride down to the store at lunch time if they have it in stock and can put it aside for me.
I'll probably pay a little more if I can get it (and need it ) immediately.

I suspect that the cost difference would be minimal, so I would go for option A.

These are such open-ended questions that answering them is useless. Even were I to tell you where (in Israel) I go for the cheapest hardware, I doubt it would be the cheapest for you once travel costs are factored in. Ditto for convenience.

I'd say "convenience store", but I think quality may suffer as a result.
I think there's a Best Buy closer to me anyway (about five minutes according to Maps), so I might go there.

I try to go both... If I am not in hurry.
Here in Germany there are a couple sites that get really cool offers from time to time, so it is just a matter of patience to find good things with cheap price.
If I am in hurry... then I go for convenience and I don't pay so much attention to the price.
