But the WEEE & RoHS European directive on the abolition of Leaded Solder came into force on 1st Jan 2006 banning the use of leaded solder throughout the whole EU. If you are still using leaded solder, your company could be up for some serious fines (or a nasty letter in extreme cases). I even went lead free at home in 2002!

Ah, we do (mostly) work for the States where its not applicable, also I was under the impression that the aero industry & military were exempt as lead free solder can fracture under shock loads (leading to bit floating around that can cause shorts)and creeps under high temperature...

It's possible - any industry that uses depleted uranium isn't going to be over worried by a little lead poisoning!

Up to this point I thought it was soldiers you were discussing and I had got quite confused. Early lunch me thinks.

You can still buy lead solder from UK suppliers[^] - I buy it because the non-lead stuff is crap!

It's a bit harder to work with - it needs a higher temperature, which can cause problems - and it doesn't mix with existing leaded solder for "touch up" jobs, and it wears through tips a lot faster. But once you are used to it, it's pretty good if you buy the "good stuff" instead of the cheap rubbish.

The issue we find is the flux in it means it can't be reworked as easily, also the high temperatures can lead to damage of the components(!)

Yep - but you got that with leaded if you held the iron on diodes for too long.

But it was a case of face/palm interface do it again, stupidly these days it looks soldered (not as shiny as leaded) will it work, plus less bad words were used in construction to encourage the melting of the solder!

It was referring to itself, Shirley?
Given that the bourgeoisie can't spell, I'd say it was pretty appropriate.

And it is quite hard, so best of luck.
