Well, going strictly by size, Chuck's adversary from "An Eye For An Eye" (yes, it's in my 12Tb collection), Professor Toru Tanaka[^] would probably be better - if it wasn't for the fact that he was hawaiian - and died 13 years ago...

A dead Japanese you say? Well, he could probably outact Cruise (and definitely outact Cage, even if one of them has been cremated)

Well, I thought he was japanese. Turns out that he was in fact Hawaiian. He looked a lot more asian in my opinion...

OK. A dead Hawaiian could probably still outact Cruise.

It's a good question, and one that doesn't seem to have had any consensus elsewhere on the internets.
You need someone big, taut, but not too good looking, someone with a gruff voice and a weary look.
I don't know either.

Good list, but most of the people are too small for Jack Reacher. I could see Jason Statham as a good Reacher, but he doesn't quite have the build. My man Dolph would probably also be a lot better than Cruise. I'd go with him instead. 20 years ago, Arnie would have been a contender as well, I think...
I did get a strange and very odd thought, though: If it wasn't for the accent and if he could lose a few pounds, I think that maybe Gerard Depardieu could be a wild card... Am I totally off my rocker with that?

Glancing down the pictures Dolph struck me as right facially straight away.

Or maybe you're lucky not to meet him, even if it was a long time ago he has been the European Karate champion twice.

It is my understanding that he still trains as much as ever. But apart from that, I WOULD like to fight him. There are some, but not THAT many people that can boast of having had the sh*t kicked out of them by Dolph Lundgren...

My 1st thought was Jason Statham who I dismissed straight away for the same reasons you give and then my second thought was Gerard Depardieu. What are the chances, unless it's that one big jellyfish poster thing.

Yes.
Common sense is admitting there is cause and effect and that you can exert some control over what you understand.

Well, Dominic Purcell would seem to be a great choice. He could definitely carry it off, and being in his 40s, he's old enough as well.

At least Hugh Jackman would be closer to the right height -- which he is very far away from as Wolverine.

Given that Reacher's RIFed out of the forces, I reckon that Liam Neeson would be a reasonable choice.

I seem to recall having read a rumour somewhere that he wanted to retire?!?! But given the number of movies he's currently got in post-production, I guess that it's not going to be anytime soon...

If we can ignore the height factor, this is my list.
1. Tom Hardy
2. Ryan Gosling
3. Sean Bean
4. Ray Stevenson
5. Kevin McKidd
Otherwise
Dolph Lundgren and Hugh Jackman are perfect for the role except they are more muscle than brain and Jack Reacher is both (which is why he is difficult to cast).

Now, this is not because I train karate in the same club as Dolph, but I have to disagree with you on the brains issue: He's got an academical degree in chemical engineering, and is said to have an IQ of more than 180 (he claims himself that he doesn't know the exact number), so Dolph is just as much brain as muscles. He might not always give that impression in his roles, though...
