Found out yesterday that due to a degenerative condition that I have, I need to have back surgery to decompress several discs and to remove bone spurs. It has been very painful to walk, and exercise has been difficult. I need to go for a CT scan today so the Dr. has recent pictures to perform the surgery.
I will have to cancel some gigs my band has in January.
I have lost over 20 pounds in a race against time by riding bike 3 to 5 miles a day and keeping active. Time beat me on this round. Oh well, being in better shape will speed up the recovery. I know that I wanted some time off, but this is not what I had in mind.
The upshot is that the project I am on at work is just at the point where I can wrap up a few loose ends and off to testing it can go. Woo hoo!
It was broke, so I fixed it.

Good luck! I hope you won't need it, and you probably won't.
I've had back pain only the once, and it wasn't any fun at all - so it's got to be good that they're operating sooner rather than later.
Hope the recovery goes well!

Ouch! ...sounds painful... wishing you a full recovery...

Ugh, that sucks, and I can sympathize since I believe I'm headed that way myself. Degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, etc. Sucks to get old.

Speaking as someone who's had the back surgery, may I offer my best wishes, and a little piece of advice? You've mentioned you're currently active... STAY active! It REALLY speeds up the recovery process. Even when you don't want to get up and go for a walk, do it. It will be worth it. I was given a six-month recovery window, and by the time I was discharged from the hospital I was walking about 1.5 kilometers a day (around the ward, to be sure, but walking nonetheless.)
Take care of that, though! You only have a one back!
Be well!

Get a nice and fast recovery.
Keep coming during the recovery, probably in January there will be a "XXX walks into a bar..." joke that will be funny at all...

Good luck and hope recovery is swift.

I know everything about compressed discs.
But luckily I haven't experienced bone spurs.
Good luck with the op!
Oh, and it's true what they say, keeping active will help healing faster.
Politicians are always realistically manoeuvering for the next election. They are obsolete as fundamental problem-solvers.

"What Turing gave us for the first time (and without Turing you just couldn't do any of this) is he gave us a way of thinking about and taking seriously and thinking in a disciplined way about phenomena that have, as I like to say, trillions of moving parts.
Until the late 20th century, nobody knew how to take seriously a machine with a trillion moving parts. It's just mind-boggling." Daniel C. Dennett

Fun Find OTD:
When clicking on the Find Next button in Excel (2010), the mouse moves with the dialog when it covers up the cell in which the text is found. Never knew it did that.
