Adobe Flash Player has been wanting to update my computer forever so I finally let it and during the installation I noticed that it was installing McAfee Security Scanner. I guess I didn't read the fine print that allowed them to install it. WTF!

It's OK - I've still got all 13 disks if you need them.

I still have my Lotus Smartsuite 97 CD...
Mind you, it still worked last time I installed it, and WordPro is still probably the best word processor ever written. The version of Word (2010) I use these days has nothing on it: slow, clunky and cluttered in comparison.
If WordPro could read and write Word 2010 files (or Word could read WordPro files properly) I'd probably still be using it: and it's a 16 bit app...

Haha... I was wondering who installed McAfee on my computer , now I know.

I guess Adobe collects a fee when an unwitting victim installs the 'third party' apps like McAfee. It's the price we pay for using their freeware/crapware. What amazes me is the number of updates required for their products...unless they are pushing updates merely to collect the drive by revenue.

Adobe Flash is really bad, they want to update a lot, and as far as their crapware I don't mind I can always check the box that says "Hell no" but what pisses me off is when they don't even offer and just assume I would like that POS installed.

And Java thinks we all need Askme.com toolbar too,
You (Oracle) don't have to ask me every flipping time I patch your vulnerable software!

Yeah no sh*t!
They make the browser dependent on these add-ins then they try to sneak stuff in on us.

I just recently discovered a new way that parasitical software is bundled. You do not get the expected prechecked "install this virus ridden cr.. checkbox"; instead you are given the option of the Advanced Installation where you need to deselect install "cr.. component 1", "cr.. component 2", etc.

Yeah they're getting sneakier and sneakier.

Yup. That happened couple of weeks back, it just added McAfee Scanner Plus or something of that sort. Despite me having McAfee Enterprise installed !! I uninstalled the uninvited guest immediately. Then curiosity took over me as generally I make sure checking all options before hitting ok in any installation.
So I uninstalled Flash Player and installed again. And hell no, it did not give any way to let me decide that I don't want that crap piece of software !! I thought that's a law that requires installable to give option to choose what they want or do not want to be installed alongside !
Thanks,
Milind

I didn't think there was an option but couldn't remember.
I don't think there's an official law to prohibit installing crapware but it's kind of an unwritten law that you only install what's advertised. Well Adobe sucks anyway, I'm pissed because they went to the cloud with Photoshop, a greed grab as far as I'm concerned.

Back in the good old days, we would go visit the perp with shotgun in hand, cocked, and angry as hell. Then, things worked out better. They got the message loud and clear.

I too run into this trap... I noticed that they "offerred" McAfee alongside the Flash installation. However I was convinced that there would be a checkbox during the installation where I could prevent that installtion. How I was wrong ... There was only 1 button "Install" and it installed everything

Sucks, but it was fast and easy to uninstall. May be a while before I update again though!

Easy to uninstall... That's what's making me so suspicious
Wen't to Add/Remove Programs and it was gone after less than a second... Yet, I still have a feeling that something is very very wrong... Especially considering that we're talking about an AV program..

Yeah I wondered about that also, no popup saying it was uninstalling, etc., but doesn't seem to be any lingering effects? Maybe it's was installed on behalf of the NSA.
|
|
|
|
|
Yeah. I even checked for lingering McAfee folders somewhere but didn't find any... I guess it's time to uninstall Flash Player again.
(I don't even now why I (or what) installed it... It's way more convenient when it's embedded into the browser, and I use only chrome anyway...)

Anyone else noticed an increase in spam email over the last 48 Hours?
They are bogus emails from Barclays, DHL and Skype and all carry an attachment which the email tries to convince you to open.
There was a spate of these a couple of months back and they appeared to stop overnight when that big botnet was shutdown. Hopefully these will also come to an end soon, but at least they provided good teaching aids for showing my eldest on what to look for in a dodgy email.

Yes, and they're actually coming through my spam filters. That's very rare - or at least it used to be.
