I'd keep it simple if I were you - users already know what undo/redo buttons do. Try not to force them to learn something new.
If you must, then provide your buttons as an additional set of buttons, preferably highlighting the undo/redo buttons, and having the additional ones slightly less eye-catching.
If you must go with an advanced undo/redo, look at the way Vim does it - undo/redo is a tree that can be traversed (so undoing something, then typing, still leaves the original redo in place if the user wants to), and it has time travel, so the user can say "restore this document as it was 3m27 seconds ago" or similar.

Thank You for your comments.
As it happens I am writing a persistent multi-branch undo/redo w/ time travel and other features package for another application. Hopefully said package will also become an extension to VS but we'll see if such is possible as I have never written such.
As for already knowing what undo/redo buttons do please see my comment above as its behavior often surprises me.
Kind Regards

The average user (including me) would just find that over complicated. Undo should just allow you to step backwards through all the edits (something I find useful quite often). Redo should just repeat the last action (something I rarely use). Plus you would have an extra four buttons just adding visual clutter for features that are really not in demand - unless you have a marketing survey that says otherwise.

Very much this. Every time I run into an editor that tries to be clever and have un/redo move through history multiple characters at a time I frequently find myself having to undo-undo-undo-anoyed-redo-angryThinking-undo-retype (alternately ...angryThinking-retype depending on which save point is farther from what I actually wanted) cycles.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

No (not easy) too many options - the answer was the only other word I could think of.
