I was bored this morning, and decided that I hated the startup sound on my laptop. I started thinking about the startup sounds from past windows versions which led me here. http://www.winhistory.de/more/winstart/winstart.htm.en[^]
Now my laptop starts with the '98 theme! I had forgotten how nice it sounded.

With Windows 3 I recorded "This station is now the ultimate power in the universe" and used that. Unfortunately CP doesn't allow uploading WAV.

I tried using my own wav (done with sound recorder long ago) for something similar. Problem was, startup processes were halted until the wav was done playing...probably not the case anymore with multi-core and all. I think I'll chop out the end of Temples of Syrinx and give it a try! 'Attention all planets of the solar federation...We have assumed control.'

I was just looking through Win 7's sounds options and it looks like you can't change the startup sound, only set whether or not to play it. It could be set as a logon sound.
Edit: The logon sound also plays when you unlock.

You can change it, but it needs a hack to C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll to replace the
5080 [English (United States)] WAVE resource.
You could probably do it in VS - but I'm not going to try - or google should find you a DLL hacker that will allow you to do it. But...backup first. And caveat emptor...

That reminds me of hacking copies of the Win3 "Flying Windows" screen saver exe to display other images (characters).

Of course we would!

I had several soundbytes from Cabin Boy.
Exclamation: "I'm in desperate need of assistance!"
Question: "Perhaps you could help me."
GPF: Terminator 2 "You're DEAD already!"
Shutdown was from Total Recall: "You have to want to return to reality."

I thought it would be amusing to modify my Win XP startup by adding wow and lots of crackles. It was funny the first four or five times and then...
(for younger readers, wow and crackles were part of the experience of listening to vynil disc recordings of yesteryear).
I may not last forever but the mess I leave behind certainly will.

Miss Jenny sounds an awful lot like my favorite ex-wife.
If I were Khun Somjit I would stay away from Miss Jenny. Then again, he only has a 50% chance of living through their last encounter, so it may not be an issue in the future.
