You should not need luck in brewing coffee. Given the right beans and equipment, it should be quite predictable.

Hi All,
My quest to finish the project I'm on at the moment is not going well due a lack of clear direction (I want it to work!, not how you want it to work), Instrumentation that is flaky. Spent most of last Friday try to talk to one instrument only to conclude it was dead (got the boss man to confirm it with me) got another two sent over do like for like tests and find the failed one hasn't failed. Boss confused, I spent most of last week doing early mornings and late nights in hope of getting stuff out, basically burnt myself out for nothing.

Because he allows it to happen. People will only take advantage of you if you let them.

That is what happens when you do early mornings and late nights in hope of getting stuff out.
An occasional early morning or late night is acceptable but when it comes to doing it on a daily basis things are out of control.
If you haven't started to look for other employment by now you should use your early mornings and late nights to do just that.

The worst bit of it is I like my job, the company I work for and the general set up. I don't like this client took over a project and the people left and took with them the knowledge of this product. Leaving us as the only people that still talk to them with out lawyers being involved...

Then stop complaining.

You have been wincing about this for 3 weeks or more. Either tell the client the truth about the situation and what it will take to fix it or suck it up and continue to be abused.
The continuing cycle of complain, complain, complain and not taking the advice offered will get you nowhere.
Face it you either change the situation or you live with it.

All of us programmer/engineer types have an absolute responsibility as a part of what we do to kick things back when the requirements aren't sufficiently discrete as to be clearly implementable and testable.
Working with the customers to refine them, certainly. But you can't implement "it" if they can't define "it". Hard stop.
I used to think "well, great. But it doesn't work that way here." Nonsense. It works that way everywhere you insist it works that way.

The phrase you are searching for is "Make it so"
Possibly "Make it so number one" depending on personal circumstances.

We are currently in the middle of a massive storm. Wish me luck in getting to school!
EDIT: Got to school during a calm-ish period in the storm.
