See? there is always an argument as to the Man of the Match!

I am setting up an older eMachines computer for use in my electronics 'Mad Scientist Laboratory'.
It will run Windows 7 and have a number of things installed. ex:
* Firefox (better than IE)
* KiCad (VERY cool electronics/pcb design application. And it's free!)
* LibreOffice (for various things, including a components inventory)
* Python 3.4.1 (Utility scripts)
* Geany (for editing above mentioned scripts)
* PNotes.NET (For notes [duh])
* Foxit Reader (Better than Adobe Reader)
* Cubic Explorer
* PeaZip
Does anyone else here like electronics? If so, what software do you use?
EDIT 5/30/2014-9:28 PM: Installing the many updates. This is going to take a while.

That's hardware, not software.

Beat me to it. Can't upvote on the phone, so you'll have to imagine this reply is an upvote.

You can if you switch to Full View instead of mobile view.

Or log in on the computer when I come home.

KiCad looks interesting, I personally use Eagle as it's also free.
Also have TeraTerm[^] and PuTTY[^].
I don't know what equipment you have but Saleae[^] just came out with a new line of logic analyzers that look pretty cool. I've got an older model and I don't know what I would do without it, especially doing communications; SPI, I2C, etc..
Also if doing anything with Atmel chips I recommend Atmel Studio 6.2[^] is the latest.

I don't have much equipment yet. I have a cheap soldering iron from Radio Shack, a breadboard, and a number of basic components. I am trying to save money to get more equipment and components.
My favorite site to look for things is All Electronics[^].

Another good place for surplus parts is B G Micro[^], I've got a few things there and quite a bit on eBay.
Good luck it took me a long time to amass my supply. Used/Broken equipment is another good place for parts. My neighbor had an office next to my apartment and used to throw away a lot of printers, etc. and I used to scrounge parts.
If I can be of any help let me know.

Interesting. I've had my eye on things like this for a while: http://www.hantek.com.cn/en/ProductDetail_3_10.html[^]
Never used a logic analyser before but there is more I2C in my life these days. Do you think it beneficial to keep oscilloscope/logic analyser separate?

Nice unit!

Not necessarily I just happened to do it that way because it was cheaper.

Real electronics design is done with a pencil, but for wimps (and rich people) there's SPICE[^].

The drawing isn't as important as the math and physics; you can always hire a draftsman.

Arduino IDE, SVN (or GIT or both), SDCC (for 8051), Oracle Virtual Box, Eclipse IDE for C, HxD (Hex Editor), Notepad++, Wireshark,...
Some already mentioned: PuTTY, Python,...

In a different decade century millennia life I was designing PCB in OrCad. I doubt it's worth the money if you're not a professional.
Otherwise I can really recommend a proper soldering station.
I'm quite partial to the old fashioned Weller WTCP series, because the magnastat temperaturesensor is the actual tip.

Great soldering stations! Does Weller still make them?
