Being offensive, vulgar and anti-intellectual is in fashion these days.
I'd rather be phishing!
|
|
|
|
|
I fail to see how any of these are anti-intellectual?

For elephanting elephants' sake! "Holy sh*t" is now obscene? Child porn is obscene. Colourful language is just that. Colourful.

It is surely true that many people find certain words offensive
These include sh*t f*** c*** a***hole and others.
whether or not you agree with that is certainly your choice.
But surely it is only the polite thing to do to respect other peoples sensibilities?
Or do you swear in front of children and is it OK if they swear too?
What if they tell their teacher they didn't do their homework because they were "f***ed"? should the teacher just chastise them for not doign homework but for using inappropriate language?

_Maxxx_ wrote: Or do you swear in front of children and is it OK if they swear too? You do have a good point here. There is indeed some risk that very young children may see these words in the same light-hearted context their parents do, and assume they can use them anywhere as a joke as well.

One of the most stupid arguments around!
All drugs should be legal and able to be consumed by anyone of any age because everyone has the right not to obtain the drugs?
So a flasher should be allowed to whip it out in public because young ladies can just avert their eyes?
What about a nudist? Should he be allowed to wander around naked at will? In a school for example?
OK if the local supermarket sells hard core porn next to the chocolate at the checkout? It's fine- you don't have to buy if you don't want to - and you can always shop elsewhere.
It's about the generally accepted community expectations.
I personally don't like hearing people swear except where swearing is appropriate (e.g. you just hit your thumb with a hammer or you are telling a joke where the swearing is appropriate to the joke or emphasis. e.g. the opening lines of Four Weddings is simply the word 'F***' repeated many times - and is contextually sensible (and funny). But I know people who were offended even at that.
So, when I am in a group of people who may find swearing offensive I don't swear (much!) because, and here's the thing, I'm a decent, caring individual with no desire to offend people.
I've had to deal with teenagers whose parents swear; here's a typical conversation between two such teens
"F***in' last f***in' night the c*** was f***ing down here f***in doing olllies on f***in' Ed's f***ing board!"
"f***in' right!"
not the sort of conversation you want four or five year olds to hear, really?
So - appropriate language at appropriate times.
And F*** etc. is not appropriate in a newsagent or gift shop. would you buy a card, go up to the counter and say
"How f***ing much is this c***, then?"
I know that it's just noises, and logically taking offense at a word is ludicrous when it is not said against anyone (e.g. f*** off) but there we have it - offense at nudity is also stupid, for that matter why do we eat in public and poo in private?
but we do
and we should all try to remember one another's sensibilities.
Merry f***ing christmas

I'm amazed at just how far they will go to find something to be offended by. I don't imagine many people who would be offended by these items actually receive one. I'm sure most of the market is for lads sending to their mates, not their aunties.

It's a marketing gag, which means it can be both.

Didn't know "offensive" and "funny" were mutually exclusive...

I think they went well but... There does seem to be the ask a question, get an answer, ignore answer, ask another question, re-ask first question thing happening in interviews at the moment. I suppose it is to see if the answers are the same but...
Also have an appointment with the DWP at lunch more bloomin form form filling...

The DWP is taking you out for lunch?
They never even gave me a cup of coffee...
Bad command or file name. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaay...

Don't worry the DWP (or as I like to refer to as

How do you think it went?
When will you know if you got it?
How do you think it went?

I think the Face 2 Face went well I could produce examples of things I work on that were similar to there products, I at least identified pretty much all the parts of a circuit diagram correctly, I haven't used Labview (at least the part of it they use). The only down side is the agents want to send a very grovelly thank you letter. The phone interview has led to a face to face, the thing that makes me nervous is the fact it is a contract rather than a perm role.

Ok and how do you think it went?
Your time will come, if you let it be right.

On the whole not too bad!

|

Well there was lots of Circuit diagrams, Allen Bradley & Rockwell PLC's which I could identify also I had done some very relevant work in the testing field so
