It has taken me all afternoon to try and downgrade my tablet, and the android is still on his back with his belly open....but it looks like it's actually sending things...and Android is booting!
Everything has been difficult: the cabling (short fast-charge cable that comes with Nexus 7 pulls too much power from USB, and disables my PC keyboard, longer slow charge cable doesn't get recognised as Nexus device, probably because Lollipop is in "slow motion mode" and not talkine to windows), download of 4.4 from Google is in a TGZ file, which contains a TAR file, which has a ZIP and an BAT file, but not the EXE or DLL files you need to use them, ...

This is the type of stuff that I try to remember when I build software.
There are so many stupid things about the way computers work and end users don't care about the difficulties of development. They just want it to work.
I am an end user. I just want it to work.
This is yet another reason why I loathe, iTunes-the-Virus.

It's booted as V4.4
It's fast and smooth as a very fast, smooth thing.
Of course, it has no apps on it at all (other than the Google standard stuff) but I uploaded screen captures of the apps list pages to Dropbox before I killed Lollipop just in case!
And now - load all the apps back... sigh ...

That's one of the joys of the Play Store.
You can just open it in a browser on your PC, and go through the list of apps that were installed on the device previously, re-installing them from there.

I've used iTunes for media management and hardware back-up / syncing for over 6 years and it's always worked just fine.
Maybe you're using it wrong?

But the 428 hours a year you spend waiting for itunes to do anything far outweighs any wrongly-perceived efficiency gain.

Except it runs quite snappy on my 6 year old iMac and equally fast on my 3 year old Dell.

Trying to use a hub? I know a lot of cheap ones assume you'll never plug enough high current devices in to theoretically max out all the ports at once and gleefully agree to all "I can haz moar powar" requests without actually making sure they can provide it.
If you're running directly plugged into a PC though; that's more worrying. A desktop shouldn't have any problem providing as much power as it negotiates to an arbitrary number of devices at once. It's not like anything else on your mobo is drawing power from any of the five +5V wires in the atx cable (or that much of anything is drawing on the ~100W of +5V your PSU can provide for that matter). It might be worth putting the tablet in a separate pair of ports though; I'm not sure if anything is shared between a pair of ports, but the way they're always bundled together makes it slightly possible I guess.
