I've gone through every Control Panel setting I can think of that might have an effect (even changing the default keyboard and language), but I'm stuck with Beaufort (and now horsepower).
I want to hit it.

Apparently you have hit it - thrice!

My responses weren't showing up before so I entered the same response twice.
It must have been a glitch that is now fixed, or at least not manifesting itself for the time being.

Actually my response is still not showing up, but I know not to post it again.

Another bonus from the reinstall is that now the air pressure around here is 999 horsepower (pic, so it happened[^])

I get 1002 mb which is believable, 999 hp not so much.

It's always mb, isn't it? I know that some scientific types measure atmospheric pressure in pascals, but "out in the wild" I've never heard of anything but mb.
Oh, if I change to Fahrenheit, "Barometer" changes to "29 in" (about a metre, by my calculation).

The US has to be different from the rest of the world.
Even the British don't use Imperial Measures any more.

Oh yes we do. Distances are miles, Beer is pints - and that's without thinking.

Sorry I thought only the US used antiquated measurements. Obviously I was mistaken.

Don't know what you're using as your yardstick for that but here by the 8 furlong horse track, where they recently ran a 2000 guinea race, I'm cruising along at 50 miles an hour sucking on a mint I took from the quarter (pound) I bought at the sweetshop, excessively smug about the miles per gallon I'm getting. Next stop is the cemetery where a friend was recently interred six feet under (his family wanted him cremated but his will wouldn't give an inch on that) after an unfortunate accident on a 3 fathom deep lake. I'll be leaving a dozen lilies on the grave and then going to a memorial do where we'll share a firkin of cider and toast him with a yard of ale before downing a few pints in quiet contemplation.

Nice one! I never knew that.
... The problem being that I dare say 99% of people don't know it either, so what lunacy inspired them to use it on a "friendly" app?

The wind has dropped from Beaufort 6 to Beaufort 6! (from 50kph to 41kph)
So if I head out west-sou-west, I'll have a nice, easy ride back.

I admire your optimism.
You know that on any read that has a headwind going out will also have a headwind coming back.
