Alright, you got me... It's actually my strategy to get more work done during the day. As soon as someone enters my office they get this weird look on their face, turn around and make a run for the bathroom. My daily interruptions are at an all time low and my productivity is soaring. I plan to take the car to work one of these days so my boss can enter my office and promote me for my superior productivity

In that case it's also a great strategy to get your private office

Good suggestion, I'll put it in practice ASAP - also it is 42 km from home to work, should work pretty fast!

I bike every day as well. It's 34km round trip, but I couldn't imagine having to drive it. I would likely wind up dead from a stroke after all the road rage.

Just because you do plenty of exercise, don't think that compensates completely for sitting 8 hours a day! It does help of course, but you need to get up, take a walk. Work standing some of the time, and sitting at other times. Change things around a bit.
A bad back is pretty minor compared to some of the things you can get by sitting all day... like SO many of us do!

I'm 47, and don't drive. In spite of programming for over 20 years, I've just begun developing back problems in the last 3 or so (due to a fall-related coccyx injury). I put it down to lots of walking, cycling and casual exercise, integrated into daily life.

Cycling does very little to work your back muscles, or any of your core muscles at all. Great for the legs and cardio in general, but a more comprehensive workout routine will go much farther in strengthening your core and addressing back problems.

Yes I recommend yoga also

There are basically only two muscles that keep you upright; stomach and back if you let one go the other has to compensate.

Yes, I've had my spine removed long ago since it was really just a bother anyway.
Much easier to be spineless these days.

Right!!! The only muscle I've been exercising lately is my brain and the rest has been settling to my ass.
