I realized that bear spray can be used in two ways: one where you take your chances slowing down a bear, or the other where you slow down the tourists around you.
That's a bit wrong, isn't it?

You do not have to worry about the tourists around you. Most of them are clueless when it comes to wildlife. We drove through Jasper two weeks ago on the way to Edmonton and came upon a bunch of vehicles parked on the side of the road. There were lots of people (mostly Asian tourists) standing on the side of the road and down the embankment with there cameras pointed at something. Upon a closer look there was a grizzly bear munching on something at the bottom of the embankment. The closest tourist was literally no more then 30 feet away from it.

There are two types of people in this world: those that pronounce GIF with a soft G, and those who do not deserve to speak words, ever.

I hope you've hidden Sean's Spandex 'SuperAdmin' outfit this time! It gets a bit unnerving, especially on an empty stomach, when he starts doing 'that' dance wearing the outfit. I mean, in their place, there is nothing wring with Spandex, Taffeta or Sequins, but together in the company of Sean it is just too much.

We were just in Banff last week. Absolutely beautiful there. Enjoy your time there.
If you have the time, be sure to drive the icefields highway up to Jasper, you will not regret it.

Windows Defender on Win 10 is driving me round the twist - it's the AntiMalware bit that's doing it. Despite telling it in Task Scheduler that I only want it to run at 18:00 every day, if I go to make a coffee it still kicks in because my PC is "idle" - and that's my PC effectively replaced with a 286 for an hour.
I mean...with Win7 my CPU fan kicked in once a month maybe, when I was doing complicated stuff. With Win10, it kicks in at least once a day thanks to Antimalware and Rundll32...and it's LOUD!
So...in the interests of not running without an antivirus, or reverting to win 7 (which becomes more enticing every time Win10 throws in another annoyance) does anyone know of a good antivirus for Win10? One that does what you tell it to, quietly in the background, and doesn't hog at least one core and my whole HDD for an hour if I pop off to the loo?

I use this[^], the Internet Security Package. I am totally happy with it and it is easy to use, even got it on my Smartphone.

I can live with paying for it - anything free is worth what you paid (look at Win10...)
Just so long as it doesn't do a Symantec / McAffee / Defender and just work as it's supposed to...

As far as i can tell you by my experience, easy to set up and does what you want it to. (YOu can do a lot of advanced stuff if you want). It is sometimes annoying because it protects you every meter if you let it
But for scans and stuff it is not that resource hungry as McAffe or Symantecs AntiVir.
Maybe u'll get a trial first (should be available) and see if it fits you, as far as i read it is win 10 ready
EDIT: BTW, i am using it for roughly 7 years now, never wanted to change

Do you mean Essentials ? Or did you install Defender on Win 10 ?

No, they abandoned MSE with Win8, and replaced it with Defender then. Win 10 auto installs it and activates it as and when it wants.

You mean rebadged it again (debadged it?)? Didn't it used to be called Windows Defender before being renamed MSE a few years ago?
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?

You are going about it the wrong way, throw a few more cores at it and an SSD (or faster one if you already have an SSD) things will be back to normal.
Didn't you know you can't upgrade your OS with spending a bit on the hardware.

I've been using AVG Free for many years without issue. It sometimes seems to run a long time when you boot up but doesn't noticeably affect other running processes. the only problem is that when it upgrades itself, you get prompts to load the full AVG product as a free trial but it is worded as though it is an update to AVG Free so you have to make sure that you don't accidentally get the free trial instead of the free version (it is possible to revert, but they don't make it obvious).
I agree with the other respondent who suggests getting an SSD. I did that in preparation for upgrading to W10 and it has dramatically reduced boot time.
