Compuserve, and a short list of BBS's (remember modems?)
Before that, books, chip specs, and Byte Magazine.
But then again, life was a lot simpler. No viruses, no concurrency, no lambda expressions, no database, no REST, no JSON, no NoSQL, no graphics to speak of, no routers, switches, gateways, IP addresses, just 8 bits on the CPU running at 1Mhz, heck you could decode the data and address bus on an oscilloscope. One language (BASIC), maybe PASCAL coming in the future, or FORTRAN card decks if you were coming from the past. LISP? Only real geeks knew how to code in that and its cousin, FORTH. Most of us were still coding in 6502 assembly language.
(Not that all those things and better languages than BASIC didn't already exist, I'm just talking about what was accessible/affordable in the days of the Apple II, Commodore PET, etc.)

Helifino! If it was something I needed to know, I usually bought a manual. Having moved just a couple of years ago, I'd guess that I still have over 200 pounds of books and manuals that I'll probably never use again...but I can't bear to just throw them away. I still prefer manuals over screen reading.

...and it is FUN! There is something satisfying about placing blocks in a pixelated world.
And yes, I do have some mods installed.

My son and daughter are avid players of minecraft. I play from time to time. Good mods add to the fun.
I HIGHLY recommend this mod platform for Minecraft: [^]

What are these mods for? My son's been playing it on an Xbox 360. Does this apply on that platform?

Mods are PC only, as they are kinda bolted in, the game has no official modding api as of yet

They are extensions to the game with all of them having some kind of theme or purpose. i.e. Star Wars mod pack, etc...
Just be careful with where you get your mods and what mods you install, due to viruses or system crashing, etc...

I, on the other hand, recommend curse.com and their launcher. It can download FTB modpacks (FTB is feed the beast, a well know team that put's modpacks togheter) AND it allows you to create a instance and install mods directly from the website.
As most authors use curseforge.com to host their mods those days, it's really easy to download and install mods and it's dependencies. For most mods is a simple 1 click install.

I'd rather play From The Depths. Mostly because it allows me to actually program with LUA in the game. :P Not very kid friendly, because I'm programming missile systems and cannons.

This Minecraft Mod[^] would be good for you then. It has Lua programming support.

I loved those things! Personally, I'm against drag&drop programming (IIRC there is a typewritten version as well), but these things were fun to make my worlds stupidly complex and automatic.

I recomend you try out the mod botania (if you haven't done it yet), it's on www.curse.com[^], but you can download it from the site too (www.botaniamod.net[^])
It's a magic mod that's based around flowers and has LOTS of references to anime and pop culture (including the konami code)

Not going to work for me. I have 1.8.8, and that only supports 1.7.10.

Most mods aren't updated for nor will update to 1.8, they will likely skip to 1.9, as they depend on the decompiled source of the game, each time mojang changes too much there's a gap between versions.
If you're really keen on 1.8 features, there's mods for that too. Et Futurum ports back most 1.8 features and some 1.9 too.

I personally suggest ChocoCraft.
It adds Chocobos to the game. Lovely, adorable, Chocobos (Wark!)
Last I played it was pretty fleshed-out. Tame wild Chocobos, then breed them together to get all different flavors (blue, green, white, black, and gold; all with the appropriate special abilities.) Having a huge farm of Chocobos of all different colors... Well it gives you those warm and fuzzies that you can only get from a huge dose of nostalgia.

I had to look that creature up. I have never played Final Fantasy (any version).
