I blame the Nolans.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

I got that, too; I guess the reason in my case is that, for whatever reason (never cared enough to really look into it), my email account on att.net welcomes me with my wife's name ("Hi, Cherri!" or whatever). Even though my email address is bclayshannon (which "it" obviously can see), it still welcomes me that way; and hers is or was vice-versa.

Must be, how else could peeple[probably TM][^] have ever seen the light of day?
I can see it now, create a 'review' of someone, let us say 'Dave from Luton' and rate him low with the comment that he's a fascist loony out for personal gain and when he disputes it you have the poor guy over a proverbial barrel.
Lawsuits? Nah, everyone will be sooooo nice.

That's scaring but in order to fight it, a better counter example is really needed.

Jokes apart, you joined CP and openly admitted to Welsh Tendencies. The point here is that on peeple , I could create a profile* for you and say what I liked about you.
* Actually I can't as I don't have your phone number, but I do have Dave's.

Everybody here already says what they like, so it's not really different!
But I'll give you a clue: my mobile number starts "07" and has eleven digits.
There may be a small prize for the first person to guess the rest correctly when they ring it and say the magic phrase "Is Dave there?"

Well that is the difference. Here, you signup for the abuse and should it prove too much you can choose to leave. With this new 'service' your profile is created by anyone entering a review of you and you will not have the right to remove either the content or your profile.
It hasn't launched and I can already hear the lawyers drinking their fees in month long binges!

Yeah, I know - but it'll get stamped on pretty hard as soon as "someone important" gets reviewed badly. Obama, or Nicolas Cage for example.

He thinks he's important.
And he's probably right - it can't be his talent or acting ability that keeps on getting him roles...

That was my first thought as well. Not sure I would want to give these airheads (I have other descriptors for them as well, but in contrast to them I am mindful about what I put out there) the attention though.

Who cares? Let people say what they want to say. They can already. Yes, this makes it easier, but anyone who is dumb enough to believe all they read on the internet is someone I don't need to deal with anyway.

The big deal here is, I would suspect, is that they collect your info and don't remove it (such as phone number). And they do so without your own consent. Sure, the NSA does it, but that's because we have no real say-so over that.

Jeremy Falcon wrote: is that they collect your info and don't remove it (such as phone number) Hm. The white pages have always done that and as far as I know, I never gave my consent. Perhaps it is inherent in requesting a phone number that you give your consent for some things.

Except it is the 'reviewer' who gives your phone number, and you don't sign up but an automated profile is created...
... a profile YOU cannot remove.
