Oh, I also had my share of those. Thermal problems are just as much fun.

This got a bit under due to the terror attacks in Paris, but it would have made big headlines otherwise:
TGV crash[^].
This happened a few kms away from the place I live, so I just dropped by yesterday and it is really impressive to see the remaining of a crashed TGV.
The interesting part is about the kids being on board -> This was the heck of a overconfidence to embed kids on a testing machine... I just can't understand how that can be possible !
I do really hope it will not turn out that they have been ignoring all the warnings - I assume there *has to* be some kind of warnings in a test train when the speed is too high - just to get some cool speeding&impressing the guests on board.

we heard about it down here in Aus .. I was wondering what happened

To link this thread with the previous, it reminded me of the Russian plane crash where the pilot was letting his kids sit at the controls and one of them accidentally disabled the autopilot.
I've driven a few trains in my youth, drivers used to be quite receptive to young kids going into the driving compartment and having a go with the controls.
They are generally a bit easier to steer than planes though, and those old DMUs and EMUs would have struggled to get enough speed up to fall off anything.

It was in the news over here, and my first thought was whether it was related or not.

Sometimes, when you're reading the news and you hear of a tragedy it is easy to miss that the number of people affected is far greater than the few who are hurt or injured.
Some Ukains may have seen in the news yesterday the story of a plane crash[^] killing four people from the same family.
The pilot played his guitar every week at our Church's 9am Mass, and he and his family were active members of our parish.
Yesterday morning there was no music.

I knew a guy with his own plane, I'd been up with him a few times, then he crashed it into a train line with a married couple on board, they had three kids and she was pregnant with a fourth.
All of them died and the kids were orphaned.
No point feeling sorry for the dead, it is those who loved them have to live with it the rest of their lives.

Details were quite sketchy yesterday, but my understanding is that the three passengers were his sister and his two grown up children. He leaves behind his wife and three younger children.

Conditions were not good for light aircraft yesterday were they. My usual Sunday Afternoon visit to the flying field was cancelled as soon as I saw the windy conditions.
Was the accident weather related?

To the best of my knowledge the weather was a contributing factor. He was a very experienced pilot, fully rated for instrument and night flying, so it is safe to assume that there was some external influence.

Yes, just read that they were locals. The church is just round the corner from us, and I was thinking of the Street Angels who worship there.
