In many places it may well be considered an over-reaction.
In Belgium, I do not think so.
They're so colonize (infested) that known terrorist can walk with impunity in many areas. I've only become aware of the state of that Belgium recently, described by Belgians on how they allowed the situation to occur. Essentially, they abandoned parts of their country to these 'guests' who run it like they never left their home country (which I thought they fled because they didn't like how things were?).

..similar to locations like "Little Italy" and "Little China".
Fleeing from a government or war does not mean that you disagree with everything you learned or dislike all your traditions.

Maybe it's different in the US - but places like 'Little Italy' and 'China Town' (== Little China) are not hostile to outsiders or running themselves as independent of the surrounding (host) country. The similarity ends with the collection of a single ethnic group into a community: sharing traditions vs. (essentially) overthrowing the host government's authority.
The general pattern in the US has been waves of immigrants arrive; settle in heavily ethnic communities (essentially, ghettos); They and/or their children, then fan out throughout the country - keeping and sharing their traditions so as to enrich the entire country.
Don't mix up preserving their culture (as in customs) with recreating their caliphate in miniature.

It might be the safest time to visit Belgium?

Probably.

The pundits would have you believe that if you've ever wanted to visit France of Belgium, now's the time, as security is tighter than it's ever been and there's no lineup at any of the tourist spots.
I can't really fault that logic.

Yes, bad moment indeed for Brussels, but Ghent is only 30 minutes away from Brussels by train and it is much nicer to taste Belgian beers in Ghent ... On "normal" days there is a fast train every hour, and there are a lot of good hotels over here - Ibis, Sofitel, Mariott ...
Cheers,

Yes, we stayed in Ghent two years ago, and did a day-trip three years ago. But almost anywhere in Belgium is good for beer.

Ok, het ziet er goed uit, I mean it sounds goed ... I'm just checking if Ghent is popular enough. But you had really bad luck - perhaps next time everything will be normal here

My memories of my one and only visit to Ghent a few years back...
Morning - some work. Mostly talk.
Lunchtime - beers. Ended up pissed.
Afternoon - blur.
Late afternoon/early evening - more beers. Ended up completely sh*tfaced.
Dinner - sh*tloads more to drink, I think there was food because we were in a petty upmarket restaurant. Ended up completely and utterly hammered. Farked if I know who paid the bill - it wasn't me.
Next day

Just noticed the thumbs up is left-handed. We can't be having that, the rest of us civilised people need to boycott the site in protest at this obvious Liberalism brainwashing by Chris and the team.

Android / Samsung use a right-handed "thumbs-up" icon; everyone else uses a left-handed icon. Looks like Chris is voting with the majority.
