Really. Surely 'American' is that very word as only Americans, of all the peoples of the world, would call it a pizza pie, literally a pie pie! Either it's a pizza or it's a pie. There can indeed only be one!

I have a dual boot setup, Win 7 and Win 10, so when it tries to auto update Win 7, that sorta makes no sense at all. At the very least, the auto upgrade could try and detect if Win 10 already exists on that system.

How? When you're running W7 the W10 set up is not part of the system. Even if it was possible to read the W10 partition, the presence of W10 files does not necessarily mean that there is an activated and operational installation.

I can think of several ways to verify that a bootable Win 10 partition exists, and that's as a 3rd party developer. I am certain that the creators of the OS would have more native means to do the same.

Then I suggest that you code one up and sell it to Microsoft. I have to say that I'm at a loss to see any way that you can remotely probe a computer operating one OS and discover another with complete certainty that it is fully and properly installed and even less certain that if you can you should be allowed to. Wouldn't it be an ideal way to introduce virus or malware to the dormant system without any fear of detection?

Well, assume there are situations where the Win 10 installation is hidden for some reason, I get that. But if there is a boot entry that points to a windows directory containing a Win 10 installation, I'd expect them to not try and auto update Win 7. Also, any dual boot setup with Windows 10 seems to use a slightly newer (Win 10 specific) boot config. Can't be hard to check for that.

Possibly, I guess. But then it's a matter of willingness. It seems clear that MS is set on wiping all previous versions of Windows off the planet, except possibly virtual machines, so I think you can count on their sympathy for your plight being pretty much absent! For better or worse, their patience with people who can't make their mind up (which is what a dual boot really says about one) is evidently exhausted.

Well, I want to use Win 10 but I also want a safe/stable OS to fall back on.

I have multiple machines with older OS's on them because I have to test the software I write on those OS's because I have customers that are still using those OS's. I'm guessing Nish is in a similar boat.

I concur! I have everything back to DOS 6.22 to have for testing. The DOS is not a dual boot but you get the idea!

Interesting, about DOS 6.22. What's that version written in? And do you have that many customers who haven't moved up to a more recent OS?

I assume it was written in assembler. I kept it to run some old DOS games I had that were fun and I wanted to show my son and some of his friends what games used to be like. That was a few years ago but I still have it on a VM in case I ever need it again.
