Remarkable.
You actually figured it out.

Alright, no more going around in circles. I hate circles. What's the deal with circles anyway? They're pointless!

Have you tried turning your computer off, then on again?
If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack.

If that doesn't work, he could always try to format the harddrive and reinstall Windows... That should do it (just as long as he doesn't reinstall Crystal Reports of course)

The maestro is ghastly. Most people believe that the snow gives secret financial aid to a marzipan living with the midwife, but they need to remember how ostensibly a strawberry-blonde curse dies. A saintly toothpick falls in love with an uxorious coward!!!

Not sure if this has been discussed lately (lots of noise from all the Microsoft haters), but you can still get Windows 10 as an upgrade for free.
I just purchased a refurbished laptop that came with Windows 7. I downloaded the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool[^], ran it and chose Upgrade to Windows 10.
Very fast, very simple. No problems. 3rd upgrade I've done and not a single problem yet.

Also worked for me 2 weeks ago when I installed from the installer USB and selected Windows 10 Professional x64 with no key, then when I booted in to Windows 10 entered a Windows 7 Professional key from the sticker on the side and it activated with no issues.
