Difference is us Senior Citizens Developers know what we're trying to do, it is normally a little detail, especially syntax, that is missing.

I think as resources - processors, storage, memory, display, networking; pick any or all - have improved a lot of the black arts of the developer's life that we grew up with are being lost.
There is a tendency to treat any bottleneck as a hardware issue rather than a software issue. I remember programming tricks from the old personal computing days to gain that extra few bytes of memory, knowing how many steps a command took so you could tune down performance, even plugging in dirty peeks & pokes to get that little tiny extra performance.
That was software art, using the latest library and downloaded tutorial? Nah.

For the masses it's not done anymore - a tablet is enough for the 90% of the population. On server business it's hardly done especially because often the service provider sells also hardware so it's more profitable selling more units.
The real challenges still happen in computing-intensive and real-time systems, where rewriting core blocks in Assebler is still considered a feasible approach.

My home laptop was moved from Windows 7 to Windows 8 to Windows 8.1... we have been content with it. My eleven year old daughter seems to have no problem navigating to where she wants to be.
So... despite all the wailing and gnashing to teeth.. it seems to be a viable option.

More likely down to the old aphorism:
- Anything invented before you turn 30 is the best thing EVER, OMG how did we ever live without this!!!;
- Anything invented when you're in your 30's is meh;
- Anything invented after you've turned 40 is the absolute worst idea in the history of bad ideas, whoever came up with this idea should be shot, etc.;

Well - I hated giving up DOS based systems.
On the other hand, I thought .NET, despite all the function-name changes for C++, was a great idea.
Web development - because it's kind of crazy fun. Also, my employer want's all the app's to be web-based, so now javascript/php/html/css feed me as well.
Scattered across all of those ages - but then, perhaps it's because I'm a very long way from normal. For all I know, you may be right . . . meh
On the other hand - I won't send or accept texting on my cell phone. Not, however, because of the concept of sending a text message bothers me, but rather how the concepts been adopted and implemented by virtually all of it's practitioners. Toooooooo intrusive for my taste.
No social networking, either . . . except here on CP !

I came to a similar conclusion (at home) with Windows XP. I tried Ubuntu Linux for a year or so but ultimately switched to a Mac. I've been much happier overall.

The whole Apple/Mac/iTurd environment just irks me too deeply to join.
Partly - I don't like to give up so much control (else I could surrender to Win10)Partly - I'm just too cheap to overpay for their products and accessories.Linux ecosystem is just the opposite - generally, the entire O/S is open-source. That's an awful lot of control given back to the user if they want it.

Actually, Apple doesn't force updates, so you really do have more control than with Win10.

W∴ Balboos wrote: I don't like to give up so much control Ummm... what "control" do you believe you'll be giving up?
W∴ Balboos wrote: I'm just too cheap to overpay for their products and accessories. Obviously your choice... but I can say this unequivocally: The Apple hardware I've owned is of MUCH higher quality than any PC I've owned. It is more reliable and has lasted longer. I'm willing to pay a small premium for high quality that lasts years longer. After all, you usually get what you pay for.
W∴ Balboos wrote: Linux ecosystem is just the opposite - generally, the entire O/S is open-source. I know, I used it exclusively for a couple years. Overall, I found the quality of the software lacking. The OS itself is stable and secure but as a desktop / laptop user I'm looking for quality apps with intuitive interfaces. Free and open source doesn't get my work done. Again, you usually get what you pay for.

I've had my PC's last until I just stripped them for the few parts that hadn't gotten so obsolete they were useless (like the floppy drives, 8-bit VGA card, RAM). Maybe it's because I buy bare-bones systems. How does that sort of thing work out for Apple - you know, buying what you want and not what you don't want - when purchasing a system? My systems are all new, now, but that's because salt water from hurricane Sandy shortened the life (killed) on everything it touched.
As for open source and free? Lacking quality?
Well, I've used Gimp 2 for years. Audacity, too. VLC and Screenhunter, and quite a few others. Easy to use and totally dependable. For the first two, easy to use at a basic level and capable of advancing as far as I'll ever need to go.
And - with a real genuine mass of "open source" parts selection as well as software don't worry about voiding my warranty because I didn't overpay for something with their logo on it.

W∴ Balboos wrote: How does that sort of thing work out for Apple - you know, buying what you want and not what you don't want - when purchasing a system? Err... exactly the same way as when you purchase a Dell or HP or Acer or Lenovo or... They each offer various choices over a range of models with specific options for CPU, RAM, etc... just like Apple.
True, you can't really build your own Apple Mac by buying components (yes, you could build a Hackintosh but that's not what we're talking about) but that's a (shrinking?) niche market even with PC's.
W∴ Balboos wrote: As for open source and free? Lacking quality? IMHO (with only a handful of exceptions) Linux applications are inconsistent and of lower than average quality. At the time I used it full time (2007 - 2008) the total lack of a decent 2D CAD application was crippling, office software was lame, graphics and printer drivers were painful.
I've kept a Linux PC around ever since but the hardware is getting quite old so judging it wouldn't be fair.
