While my Microsoft rose-tinted glasses aren't quite so bright, I do agree with your point that once you get big... no matter what you do someone will complain. You sneeze, the anti-snot police come out. You don't, the pro-snot police show up. Can't always please everyone.

I bought some kitchen foil via Amazon: 2 rolls of 450mm x 90m @ £18.99 including VAT and delivery. It's the brand I like - thick enough to not rip like wet tissue but thin enough to not squash the food.
And it arrived today - in a huge box that was about 85% air and 15% product - with an invoice.
Fine. And the invoice has a web address, so I think "Great! I'll have a look - maybe remember them for next time and save a little more by going direct".
And it's priced up at £17.98 ex VAT (@20%) or delivery ... which is only free for orders over £70. So if I buy directly, it'll cost me around 30% for the privilege.
This isn't the only site that does this - I buy Sous Vide bag rolls from FleaBay because the price includes VAT and free delivery but is less than going direct to the company.
So the company gets less money and has to pay a cut to Amazon / FleaBay / Paypal on top?
Is it just me that thinks that's really stupid?

Amazon is so much used that it is in itself an advertisement, so it makes sense. Also the site may be not updated - it happens many, many times.

I think it is about quantity (number of sales)... Via Amazon the sell more than via direct site and much of the delivery goes on the already active delivery routes Amazon has...
Skipper: We'll fix it.
Alex: Fix it? How you gonna fix this?
Skipper: Grit, spit and a whole lotta duct tape.

How many users use amazon?
How many users would know the original web-shop without amazon?
What is better, 50 cent benefit from 10k purchases a day/month/whatever? or 5$ benefit from 10 purchases a day/month/whatever?
It might be forced by amazon too, no idea.

I suspect that Amazon takes care of a lot of overhead that merchants don't necessarily like to have to take care of themselves, and would rather have customers buy through them...and the only reason they have a site of their own at all is because they pretty much have to--just so Google can say they exist.

I can't help but wonder if the classic mistake is being made here - that is, to prioritise the profit per item over the profit per day.
It's the same with shops having sales - the important thing is profits garnered in a day. Who cares how hard the drones have to work to keep the shelves stocked unless this affects their pay? Who cares if we make 1/4 the profit per item if we sell 5 times as many items.
Simple economics, methinks.
