If I was suggesting that, I wouldn't use the joke icon.

So using the "joke" icon makes it OK to say whatever you want?
I'm not saying there are topics that you can't joke about. I'm just saying you should be prepared to receive criticism if you make a joke that's in bad taste, or a joke that makes you look prejudiced.
There's a reason we don't see many women on this site any more, and the "banter-with-the-lads" casual sexism is probably something to do with it.

Everybody gets offended by something. Shall we go back to knock, knock jokes or will that offend the deaf?

Who cares - they can't hear you!
There's a difference between making an offensive joke, and making a joke that relies on, and reinforces, negative stereotypes about particular groups.
If they'd announced that the new Doctor would be played by a Muslim actor, and somebody posted a "joke" about that causing the ratings to "blow up", would you think that was acceptable?

I'm not Muslim. I have been offended by a few jokes here, but I take them with a grain of salt. It's people's actions that I care about, not their reactions.
Like I said, you find some things offensive, but other things you don't. To each his own.

That doesn't mean you can't be annoyed/angry/upset when someone starts using "jokes" to spread negative stereotypes about them.
You don't have to be a member of a group to believe they should be treated as fellow human beings.

Again, I already said that I was upset by some of the jokes here and some of which pertained to Muslims. So, yes, I can be upset. However, I take it with a grain of salt because posting a joke does not tell me anything about the poster. The posts that annoy me are the discussions that go on and on telling me what they thing (is right) and how I should think. Kind of like the thread that we have.

There you go again, making assumptions about someone. You assume you just know everything based on what? Someone's name or origin? You racist pig!

And I think the lack of women on this site has more to do with your pandering holier-than-thou attitude than with any supposed "sexism".

If she's good and the stories are good it won't matter. If not then much ado will be made of it.

It smells like a publicity gimmick to me. But the real test is if they actually write good stories. If they do character development investigating what it means for the Doctor, who has always been male, to suddenly be a female, it could be interesting. If not and the whole female Doctor is just a big shock factor, well, there are plenty of other stories to be watching/reading.
As for me, I took a break after Matt Smith, and then they removed it from Netflix, so it's doubtful I'll be watching it anytime soon.

And not because of the garbage in.
So I'm working with someone else's code that calls a web service, and there's a bunch of so-called validations that occur up front to make sure that all the XML attributes in the call to the method that calls the web service are there and populated.
Thing is:
- There's several XML attributes that are not used by the anything, but are required. Chalk that up to some change at some point, but whoever made the change didn't clean up the validation routines.
- There's several XML attributes that are required but not tested for in the validation routine. More chalk.
- There are several XML attributes that are required only if other elements are missing. But nooo...you have to provide empty values for the attributes, even if they're not required because you're providing other values. For example, there's three options "businessName", "name", and "dbaName" -- now maybe a couple combinations are required in certain circumstances, but it just seems like an elephanting kludge because the incoming data is trashy to begin with.
- Defensive programming, like not hardcoding exact casing for attributes, verifying the attribute exists before you do
.Value.Length==10 calls, nope.
Oh well, I suppose I should stop b*tching and just fix the damn code, but I'm definitely suffering from a "this is something a junior programmer should be doing with some guidance." Hmmm...that gives me an idea!

However, the salient point is "with some guidance." Having been here for 8 months now, and witnessed a complete lack of code reviews and hand-holding of junior devs by senior devs, and I completely fault management for that, I can see how that mess happened (and everything here is a mess.)
BTW, I've also taken a couple devs that are straight out of college under my wing, instituted a monthly "show & tell" so there's some communication about what people are doing, and informal code reviews with the people I work with. Ironic, but fun, given that I'm a part time contractor.

I thought most posts with a rant icon are of that nature.

Quote: like not hardcoding exact casing for attributes
XML is case-sensitive, so be very careful about allowing insensitivity -- it's probably not a good idea; better to ensure that the files come in with the proper casing.

Somebody I must have bought something from on FleaBay leaked my address, telephone number and mail address to some scammers. Over the last year they have sent me different mails, always claiming that I forgot to pay a bill and now owe them that amopunt plus a 'small' fee for their expenses. And always they show my old address and telephone number and threaten to take legal action if I don't pay. Also, I don't want to know what happens when you open the attachments they always urge you to read. Do they really think I fall for this after not working four of five times already?
Now they have changed their strategy. If they can't scare me enough, maybe it will work using my greed. I can now may make a few thousand bucks extra every month with only a few hours work. No doubt, I will first have to send a few bucks, but that's nothing more than a formality and I can read the details in the attachments. And guess what they sent me to show that they know all about me? The same old address and telephone number as always.
