Grew up in Canada; Andy Capp was a regular in the newspaper.
One of the places I worked had a yearly golf tournament; one of the developers wrote a system to track scores, handicaps, etc.
The GIF for the application was a picture of Andy Capp.. if you understood the joke, it was hilarious.

Actually Reg Smythe once admitted that Andy Capp's name was derived from "handicap". However I think that had to do with horse racing, not golf.

Sorry.. my colleague use the Andy Cap image for his golf scoring system because of the similarity to 'handicap', so.. if you knew who Andy Cap is, the image made perfect sense.
It was a 'tilt of the hat' to the cartoon.

And he was I thinking that he was isolated to the UK

Andy Capp was a regular strip in our local paper, may still be but I don't get that paper anymore.
Then there are these convenience store and vending machine staples, bad for you but tatse good[^].
It was broke, so I fixed it.

Wow!, I was under the impression he was a local to the UK & Oz, being that he is slighly Northern English I was not aware that he travelled well, but there is the evidence!

we had our yearly milestone named "C-12" which was called "Chaos" from the developers. The truth was: "Nomen est omen." Once again...
And we are still fizzeling around with that mess.

We're using vodka names[^]. In my humble opinion, the only way to go.

Odd, I once had lizards in a terrarium and I fed them bugs.

The last place that I worked for $$$, we had some competition we wanted to hide from. The paranoid product managers decided to name two of the products "MP3" and "DVD" so that anything from Google would give an endless supply of irrelevant info.
I'm retired. There's a nap for that...

I just looked at and article that compared functional programming with OOP. Seriously I just don't care. Right now I am working on recreating a program, with updates where the source code was lost. The last guy who got the job took three months and got no where so starting from scratch I have two weeks and two days to get this done and I had to finish my last project at the same time. The tester just passed the last project on to UAT. This is a full stack project from creating the DB to the UI so what the foreign object is functional programming? Don't tell me because I don't care. When do working programmers with short dead lines have time for fads? I really don't have time to write this but it needs to be said.

Plus, other working programmers with short deadlines have time to learn; a lot of them do it in their own time because they want to be exposed to other ways of thinking, other ways of doing things. If you're not one of those developers, fine, but don't moan about how hard the world is being on you with your short deadlines. Lots of people have to work to short deadlines.

Yes everyone has short dates, but we can complain. It makes me feel better.

Interesting, I've been doing OO coding since back in the 80s on my Amstrad CPC464, I'm going to have to look into this new "functional programming" thing to see what it's all about.

And the result is probably going to be worse than the original, because you have no time to properly design, test, or even - probably - specify the project. So a three month project that needs to be replaced gets chucked together in two weeks.
So in six months time, you'll have a hacked hack of an abortion to support: been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Time to change jobs and dump this on the poor sod who follows you.
Bad command or file name. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaay...

OriginalGriff wrote: because you have no time to properly design, test, or even - probably - specify the project Careful you are talking about my life there. A year into the project where one of the data sources is Excel and they are still deciding on the other data sources. They were wanted delivery last month and yet they can't decide what they want delivered.
It's a good thing they pay well...

Just be thankful you are employed.
I work 9-12 hours a day, 5/6 days a week, helping companies stay prosperous. I don't have much time to learn all this other new sh*t as well. However, you can't knock someone that has the time. Every so often I make the time so that my skill set stays as up to date as possible, but it can be challenging.
Most of this crap is a fad, and is pure shite - I agree, but sometimes, meaningful tools and functionality fall through the cracks and makes our world a better place.

If you've used Action , Func , LINQ or lambda expressions is C#, or function pointers in C++ (they have lambdas too now, I think?), or closures/lambda functions in Javascript, you're already doing some functional programming.
Pretty much every modern programming language incorporates some of the concepts of FP.

I have found that the best time to learn new things is when I'm unemployed.
And, yes, most new things are rubbish, so it's best to allow things to mature and settle down before investing time and energy in them.

Thanks for sharing your feelings, but, one does have to wonder how it is you took the time to read this article and enjoy hating it ... when you say you are so very busy.
By the way, did you ever think that using Linq is FP >
In any case, hope it all works out swell for you; functional programming will be here for you to rant against anytime you need it
«Differences between Big-Endians, who broke eggs at the larger end, and Little-Endians gave rise to six rebellions: one Emperor lost his life, another his crown. The Lilliputian religion says an egg should be broken on the convenient end, which is now interpreted by the Lilliputians as the smaller end. Big-Endians gained favor in Blefuscu.» J. Swift, 'Gulliver's Travels,' 1726CE
