I've just shown that to my PM and asked if he ran change control like this.
And in true PM fashion it went down like a lead balloon.

...for pi-hole. I found a mini pc that I hadn’t used in 6 years. Celeron cpu, 2gb ram, and a 256gb SSD. Should be much more than is required for a pi-hole box. And to think I was about to spend money...

Do yourself a favor and try pfSense. I had a PI with OpenWRT on it, and recently I Switch to an x86 firewall just to try pfSense. Best choice of the month (almost, for me!)

Heard a lot about pfSense, but it's always sounded like overkill to me. I know that I know enough about networking to be a danger to myself, so if all I want is to get rid of ads, Pi-hole is plenty good for me.
Not that I'd want to discourage anyone from trying it out.

This is why I waited long before trying it. Paradoxically, pfSense is much easier to use than it seems. In less than an hour I was able to install it, configure it as a firewall, OpenVPN server, Ads Blocker (pfBlockerNG) and set a let's encypt certificate for the admin dashboard. All through the web panel, simply filling in the fields and checking the checkboxes.
I do not know how difficult it is to install and use Pi-Hole, but OpenWRT and Gargoyle (router) were really much more complicated than pfSense

Pi-hole's install is literally a one-liner; the only difficulty is in figuring out Linux if you're not already familiar with it.
And I use DD-WRT on my router, so between that and Pi-hole, I'm happy enough with my current setup.

I don't care. I'm here to kill the planet.
Actually, the box I'm using has tiny fans (one of the only problems with running a Micro PC case) which makes it very noisy, so I'm considering still getting a pi. How can you go wrong for $35? I might also just cut a hole big enough for a 120mm fan and get rid of the small noisy ones.

Got a Pi 3 doing both pi-hole and openVPN, works fine. Running headless, uses 1WFN (one watt per fortnight).
If you can keep your head while those about you are losing theirs, perhaps you don't understand the situation.

I installed pihole. Is it configured to run on startup? I haven't rebooted the box yet, but when I checked the system monitor app, I didn't see it in the process list.
I'm new to Linux, so I don't know how close it is to Windows or what to expect after installing something.
