There's this engine called "DarkPlaces", and it improves on Q1's original performance and appearance, as well as being compatible with the official mission packs. It seems that all you need from the original game is the pak files to get it to go. It's available for both Windows and Linux, and it's free.
LordHavoc's DarkPlaces Quake Modification[^]
You can download Quake 1 for free, so everything you need (just the .pak files) should be available at no cost.
I'm still investigating quakeworld... DarkPlaces allows you to connect to quakeworld servers. I don't know what you need from quakeworld in order to connect. I'm guessing just the pak files, like for Q1. (I was right - you need the pak files from Q1.)

Damnit, now I'll have to stop playing DooM (the old one), and play Quake!
I hate having such big upheavals in my lifestyle!

If moving from Doom to Quake throws you in for a loop, don't let anyone introduce you to the Crysis franchise.
Your video card (and wallet) will thank you.

Too true.
I think I might finally have a video card that can handle it, but I don't want to be cruel to the poor thing.

in the end, its all just practice simulation for duke nuke em.

Nah. Without the front-end that came with the Duke Nukem Atomic (or Atomic Extra; smething like that) Duke Nukem's a pain; you even have to use a button/key-mapper to use a joypad (which is the ONLY way to play FPS games).
Bollocks to the sitting-bolt-upright-at-a-rickety-old-table-in-their-mothers'-basement-and-using-a-keyboard-and-mouse brigade!
For FPS games, you should lounge back and play them life-sized, projected on a wall!

Have you considered installing Steam / SteamOS?

Nope. And that is intentionally.

Hi all,
Two days ago (more or less) each time my outlook tries to connect to GMAIL a window appear with a small login web page (the login to gmail web page inside a small window)...
Is this legit? I've been infected by something insidious?
Any of you have seen it?
Thank you all!

It appears the login web page of gmail...
inside a small window...

I have addressed the problem by not using gmail.
But - since you insist - how does gmail know you are who you claim to be if you don't log in? Since you're systems obviously been compromised, I suggest rinsing with hot salty water and sun-drying for three days.

Because you configure your username and password in the account settings in Outlook.

Ahhh Haaaaa!
That's how they get you! A virus infested copy of Outlook let's you think you can preconfigure it!
They are very verrrrry tricky!

Well, I can't make it auto-login if I don't have your password. And you know you can trust me

Could be that very easily.
Web component fired up with a modified copy of the GMail login credentials page that requests your credentials mining you away to some dark net server awaiting response. Paranoia --cha, cha, chaaa!!!
Security makes me angry anymore due to "lack of" rather than existence therein. Might be time to start shipping Wireshark with Windows, hunh?! Bit-packets are like trojan horses (figuratively and literally) and probably where the Trojan reference came from (most likely).
Anyway, GMail seems to have a few changes that throw Outlook for a loop, especially considering older versions of Outlook in addition to mail account settings for trusted apps and all that Google interfacing stuff.
I was unaware of that...

There are few things as insidious as google.

I used to get my GMail through Outlook (in the good ol' days) - no more! They are getting more incompatible every day it seems to me. In addition, my new job doesn't allow access to GMail through their network (probably a good thing) so I use it on my phone only now.
- I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.

My favorite is still that checkbox on the Gmail site, where you have to tell it to "allow unsecure applications" to access your mailbox, otherwise Outlook won't work. They really are as childish and petty as Apple.

Gmail doesn't like Outlook because many of us who use Outlook use POP can delete their emails from Google's servers upon retrieval. This means Google doesn't have as much chance to see how you use that email then, which reduces their ability to data mine your personal life.

Great point. I've never thought about it like that, but you're absolutely right. Google's stated it themselves, they don't want anything deleted--EVER. Everything's up for data mining.
I'm suddenly starting to think of Google as the crows that try to rip open and pick through the garbage bags you put up at the curb on garbage day that you have to shoo away.

I can't speak for Outlook I do use Thunderbird on my desktop box so that my emails are both online and 'backed' up within Thunderbird.
I don't get any problems with requests from the Thunderbird pop email fetch.
In case it is a configuration issue I use pop.googlemail.com on port 995 with my google password saved in Thunderbird.
Is there any chance you have typed your password incorrectly into the Outlook account settings?

Nope, but I've started moving a lot for work, so I'm using it from different networks...
It was working well a couple of weeks ago... and now this popup appears each time I try to get my gmail).

I don't know about a web page, but every now and then I get a login popup.
gmail from time to time rejects the credentials and won't sync. Log on via a browser and see if you have any security alerts and follow then instructions to unblock Outlook.
Also I've got my main email in my gmail account as a backup email so that I can see any of these security notification almost straight away.

Not really new indeed. Well, sure, this particular face of the old problem is new, but the problem isn't. The problem is that Google doesn't really care about standards. Using Gmail over IMAP has been a PITA way back, your story doesn't surprise me in the least. Google wants you to use their own app, not some third-party standards-shmandards.
