what, you can't figure out why I put 'vault' - you can always ask, '????' is a bit of a sad response

Sorry. I just don’t get the chip reference.

ok, Tim's explanation .. Quote: 'CRYPTIC' (clue) without the 'IC' (chip)
I've never been good at these, so I looked up synonyms for abyss, not containing the letters [c,h,i,p] and came up with vault - completely wrong/at a tangent to the expected answer - one could argue that vault is 'an answer' at a technical level, its just wrong/not what the author was thinking of

For a faulty USB device that keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. Having killed my keyboard it would not surprise me.
Found the source; I was playing a youtube video that simply included those sounds. On restart the browser reopens the tab and starts playing the sounds again.
AAAAAAAAAaaaaah.

I just figured out the "Lemmings" thing. When you mentioned them, I was going to say that I'd even written an article about them! But for some reason I thought you meant that the noise on your computer was related to the Lemmings game, which I then had to look up.

It was a Rimworld video; the video contains the sound of some USB device disconnecting and reconnecting, and I seriously been looking at my PC to find out which USB device would create these errors. Nothing in the eventlog. Reboot. Starting browser after reboot, and getting pissed when some USB device disconnects again..
Lemmings was a nice game, unrelated to the subject, but since it was in the sig.. Twas a cool game, no?

I play very few computer games, know nothing about Rimworld, and knew nothing about Lemmings.
Rimworld sounds like it might be a very naughty game indeed! I must look it up.

First play Lemmings. Every level is a nice puzzle.
Rimworld is for the sick perverts that like to make hats from human leather. Naughty doesn't cover it; warcrimes are a way of surviving there. I'm currently under attack from 40+ manhunting cats.
1 Nomadic Tribal Let's Play/Tutorial : Rimworld - YouTube[^] FJ does ONI too and has 52 hours of gameplay. I have over 3k hours of gameplay logged on Steam

The Lemmings video I found on YouTube was a complete walkthrough of all levels. It looked rather retro but somewhat real-time, which isn't really what I go for.
Hats out of human leather?! That's far worse than what I'd imagined, which was just a world where rimming was common.

That's without the Cthulu-mods ofc

Lemmings must be over 25 years old.
It was the first computer game I ever played on my first computer, a 386 SX with 2 MB of RAM.
