My group deploys a large number of relatively small desktop application -- ClickOnce works well for that. The auto-update feature reduces update to about 1%, as we rarely encounter a problem.

WixToolset it's free, stable, Plays nice with soure control and can do anything windowsinstaller can. I have build ~200 Setups with it and can recommend it.

I mainly stay with WiX Toolset[^] for distributing desktop apps. It takes a little learning, but you can be up in running in a few hours of learning the xml markup. registering services takes slightly more work, but not a lot.
best part is that it's free and lightweight

We build software that is integrated as a plugin into multiple applications. One app uses Visual Studio Isolated Shell and has a number of plugins. The others are developed entirely in-house.
An earlier app that is still in support used InstallShield. There is one person with a license so he has to do all of the work. Consequently he's the only one who knows much about the installer.
The new plugins uses WiX. We've been using WiX for quite a while and find it easier to use than InstallShield. Our plugins have about 25 or so assemblies, most of which are installed to the GAC. Other pieces are installed in the app's local folder (the part of the plugin that interfaces between the app and the common code). WiX is great for this.

No. My boss would probably come as well.

I did that the other day. We lost power at home and at the office but the pub had it.

It was an odd combination of events - where I work runs a co-generation plant and the line to our office had broken. At the same time, PGE decide to black-out the area where I live. The pub is on the local utility, non-PGE, so they still had power.

This has recently happened to me.
I am wondering that since it was probably in the middle of a file getting copied, either that file is incomplete (i.e., would be smaller) and/or sitting on the drive as some type of an orphan.
|
|
|
|
|
The file will most likely show up with a size of 0.
When the system comes back up, you can run a file system check (Properties of the drive, Tools tab) to see if anything needs to be fixed.
No, you didn't lose the space to an "orphaned file".

When mid-life is?

But that's a problem: you have no idea when it will end. Could be tomorrow as you cross a street. Could be this afternoon, when a meteorite falls on your house. Could be in a thousand years as you fight against the Raptuul Slave Federation in the Immortals Uprising.
If you don't know when the end is, where is the middle?

Exactly! And if you do not know when the middle is, it maybe a simple 'no-sleep-last-night' crisis with no significance...

It's like Quantum Computing: at the time you "observe" the middle, it has already become outdated.
