Hi,
The Blue JET source code[^] was released yesterday under the MIT license[^]. The references in Github[^] and Wikipedia[^] aren't entirely correct. The original work that became ESE actually started in late 1988 and officially sometime in 1989. This is one of the oldest pieces of code within Microsoft Windows and is still being used by multiple services within Windows 10.

It's had at least two major rewrites and lots of added features across the years. It's not exactly the same code base that was used in NT 3.5 or Exchange 4.0...(and it isn't completely compatible across all versions, I seem to remember a breaking change in Server 2008).
I checked in the Server 2012 R2 timeframe and found at least 25 roles/features using ESE databases.

Yep,
In 2015 I was assigned a task of adding some columns and rows to the windows update DB for a new feature. Nobody in our group really understood that part of the code very well. After investigating I realized that we were using a very early subset/fork of what became the jet blue engine. Apparently a long time ago a precursor to ESE was pulled into the project and over the years... the maintainers retired or left to work elsewhere. It was some of the ugliest (and very difficult to understand) code I've ever seen.
update: I left that group around the time of Redstone 2 so I'm not sure what became of it. I believe after I left they may have started using the actual ESE but I'm not sure.

I would like to be able to return a bit help to you, but I have not even a clue what that is. Sorry.

It's an app deployment and continuous integration tool. It's relatively new and the documentation isn't as mature as I'd like. Some people have gotten it to work, but I'm struggling to even get it to work with even one simple project. I'm clearly missing something, but google is being uncharacteristically unhelpful, probably because not many people have used Habitat.
I'm writing an article about it, so it would help to understand it. I've opened a support ticket, and contacted them through my client since my client was commissioned by Chef to produce the article but I haven't heard back yet and at this point I'm basically desperate. It has only been a couple of days, but I want some lead time on getting this article finished up and the deadline is approaching. Maybe I'm overly concerned about nothing but I make my deadlines.
I wrote what I could, given what I have, but I've never used it before, and I feel kind of weird producing something that is essentially documentation for it. If I can get it to work for me then I'll feel okay about it, but right now none of this sits easy with me. I hate to produce something I can't stand behind.

Sorry... no clue here about the topic.

If the creators can't be bothered to document it at least well enough for others to get it working, my faith in the product would pretty much be non-existent. Good luck!

Actually, they're doing a lot to document it. I'm part of that effort. It's just *new* and complicated. The only issue is *I* need to know some things I currently don't - but those aren't the parts I am documenting.
I'm not going to slam this company, especially since they seem to be putting in more effort to document their offerings than a lot of folks do.
It's just growing pains, getting it out there in the first place. They have reference docs but they're simply not enough - they don't help much without examples and how tos. Which is why people like me are writing them.

Things still seem odd. If they are serious about documenting things, wouldn't they release the project after documentation was complete enough for others to use? According to their website, you must pay for their services/products, so they aren't open source. Professionals might get professional writers to help create documentation, but wouldn't they do so before releasing?
Anyway, best wishes for your work. Hope you get answers from them, and payment as well!
And tell them to get rid of such hogwash as "Operationalize Agility..." on their website.
