Because people that don't work as hard to achieve a skill still feel like they're owed something by the rest of society. (And this viewpoint exists in all races and both genders). Furthermore, this viewpoint is taught and fostered by the modern American school system. Everybody wins a trophy, regardless of how well they actually do at something, so they go through life *expecting* to be treated equally (in terms of potential job suitability) when they're not actually equal. At some point, equality and skill set diverges into separate paths. Anyone can sweep standing water off a sidewalk, but not everyone can be a programmer, or even a grocery clerk.

shanda watkins wrote: Just hire the best candidate, period.
If everybody did that, then there wouldn't be a problem.
The problems start when the people doing the hiring believe that the "best candidate" is always one particular gender / skin colour / etc. When that's commonplace, laws have to be introduced to force them to introduce more diversity into their hiring process.

Please don't refer to people as "that".

Although some people object, it's both grammatically and stylistically correct. And it avoids the who/whom problem, although those are more common.

It is not correct; it is dehumanizing.

Really, don't take a mere verbal (or written) turn of phrase so seriously or literally. There are real things to get upset about; this is not amongst them.

Why do women have to be interested in Computer Science?

Because our office smells too much like testosterone.

If it does now, wait until you hire some women!

Indeed, I could have thought about it by myself !

the codewitch claims to be female. Until I have evidence to the contrary, I'd take her at her word.

My immediate boss has 3 women and 5 men in his team. He has a colleague who runs a team that is 100% women (including the team leader). This is not at all unusual in the development centre where I work.
Perhaps the problem is that women have better things to do than waste their time on CodeProject?

It will need to be evolved into. Just like in Chemistry - so few female chem majors, even at the undergraduate level.
You can't hire what you can't find. And hiring just for the sake of some quota not only demeans the cause but does a disservice to the reputations of those who have earned their place.
And this applies across all boundaries of gender, race, religion or physical limitations. Despite the current popular opinion that we need to compensate for (real or perceived) past injustices, remember that every slot given to the less deserving is taken from someone. Not a demographic but a genuine feeling person.
Hiring for "old school ties" is a long-existent evil. So, too, is bigotry. The cure for both, if one does not want to continue the cycle via resentment, is to demand equal treatment for all.

Completely agree! We could use a little less testosterone and toxic masculinity in IT
I don't doubt that the field as a whole would progress if it was a bit more mixed.
Not sure what @code-witch has to do with it though, as he's just another dude* be it a bit... different**
