While not dead (yet) I took great pleasure in getting out of their way. Gat a call from my last employer asking for some additional work/time. Told him I would put a LARGE dent in his budget, ahh peace and quiet, I love it.

And by doing that, they also got some old friends of mine out of involuntary retirement:
Quote: Additionally, some of the science instruments and components had their own embedded microprocessor-based control systems. The MATs (Multiple Access Transponder) components, MAT-1 and MAT-2, utilize Hughes Aircraft CDP1802CD microprocessors.[43] The Wide Field and Planetary Camera (WFPC) also utilized an RCA 1802 microprocessor (or possibly the older 1801 version).[44] The WFPC-1 was replaced by the WFPC-2 during Servicing Mission 1 in 1993, which was then replaced by the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) during Servicing Mission 4 in 2009.
These were the noble versions, by the way. White ceramic packages, gold plated pins, maybe even radiation hardened: (look)[^]

Not only the old farts...
Old products too.
Today with the "planed obsolescence" many products just suck and have almost no life cycle.
I am not that old and I already have had to say "things are not built as before" in many times.

Can't say I've read the article, but if NASA engineers can't work out Widget XYZ...then Widget XYZ was poorly documented. I can't imagine NASA not having enough red tape already. So how does this happen?

Given that the project was developed over 30 years ago, the developers who knew it and the whys and wherefores are either retired or dead. Chances are pretty good they don't even know the programming language used. It's not a case of the project being poorly documented. It's a case of bringing back the original engineers is a more effective way of making a change than trying to train up current staff to do it.

Pretty much what I thought.
But given NASA's budget, and the way they do things...I'm left scratching my head as to what they'll do when the original engineers simply are no longer there...

Do old farts smell different than new farts? Just wondering.
Being an old fart myself, my wife tells me I stink all of the time. My three 19 year old girlfriends do like it, though.
