If my experience is anything to go by, if you really want to quit, you will. If you are quitting "because you should" or because someone else wants you to, the chances are you won't, or you will go back to it. In my case I was fed up of being "controlled" by cigarettes instead of my controlling my smoking - so I stopped. The patches worked for me - with some side effects - but I think the two important things are to want to stop, and to have support from friends / family, and in that order.
One thing that was suggested by the stop smoking clinic my doctor runs was to take the cash you would have spent on cigarettes each day and put it in a jar. And the end of the first month, take it and spend the lot on some nice luxury for yourself. Then keep going and do the same at the end of six months - only it's a much bigger luxury!
Helps to drive home the "how much money have I wasted on trying to kill myself?" point very firmly.
Good luck - and if you do decide to stop, let us know: I'm sure we will be supportive.

I quit 2 years ago next month, and still miss it terribly; I really enjoyed it, and never had any ill health effects. But I prefer to stay away from them simply to avoid the eventual health problems it would have caused. Curiously, I know have far more trouble with minor irritations like coughing, stopping for a breath on an uphill hike, and such. I never once experienced such difficulties while I was smoking, which really annoyed the self-righteous non-smokers I hiked with. They invariably wound up falling behind. I still maintain that smoking challenges one's breathing and heart in the same way that weight lifting challenges muscles, and some level of smoking increases the body's resistance to outside irritants.

I've got e-cigs with zero-mg "juice", flavours of which I mix differently each time.
I hardly missed cigarettes at all from day one, so it was a really easy way to quit

Been off them for a bit over 5 years. Used the lozenges to wean myself off. Don't miss it at all now. Had smoked for 40 odd years.
A then workmate of mine had quit but got addicted to the gum. I reckon his nicotine intake was more than I smoked.

16 years and a little under 3 hours ago my little Sister died of melanoma. Another 19 weeks marks 24 years since my Mother died of the same.
I'm back from taking the Daughter to Summer Soccer (just in the car before the thunderstorm) so will be having a few drinks.
Can't get pissed as I wish too as I have to be back at a customer site in the morning. Cause the 4 hour job I was sent for is just a little bit bigger than they thought.

It's almost as long as my mother has been in treatment. They get one and a few months later another b'tard pops up.

Make *sure* you're getting checked.
I went in to the dermatologist for him to check on a basil cell. This is sort of chancy as he always starts hacking away with a blade. Anyway, he did a full body check and found something in the middle of my back - never would have known it was back there... it was only stage 2, but still...
and condolences as well. Lost my Dad to cancer too damn long ago.
