...compared to Sacha Barber. That guy is - and there's really no other way to say it - simply f*ckin amazing.

Ok, actually yesterday, but that's not important...
Got a new laptop... Lenovo Y50 with an i7... Seems like a nice rig so far, but it's also my first direct experience with Windows 8.1 (All of my other machines either run Win7, Ubuntu, or Android).
Now, I don't mind the start screen... I'm sure I'll get sick of it soon, but so far I haven't tried doing any serious work on that machine (It's mostly for vacations and LAN parties)... So I can tolerate it for now. It would be utterly useless if it was a desktop, but it's a laptop with a touch screen, so it has a slight purpose.
What REALLY bugs me, though... I'm in the middle of a game, putting the GPU through its paces, and an overlay comes up saying my machine has downloaded updates and will restart in 15 minutes. The only options I'm presented with are "Restart Now" and "Close"... So I hit Close and assume I can just reboot later...
Ten minutes later... There's that overlay again... 5 minutes left! Wait, I can't postpone it? This is when having the nearest hammer more than 15 feet away was fortunate.
So yeah... Windows 8.1... You'll restart when we TELL you to restart!
(I found you can manually create a specific registry key to disable this behavior... Starting the next time you reboot... So hopefully it won't happen again, or I might have to perform unlicensed surgery on the OS)
I'm sure I'll find more things I hate about it soon enough... But that's enough for one post.

I'm not convinced Win8.1 is compatible with anything.

No, no - I'm pretty sure Win8.1 isn't compatible with PCs...

When this comes up you can go to services and turn off the Windows Update service to stop it. Keeps counting down but doesn't do anything when it hits zero.
It turns itself back on an hour or so later but that's another matter.
As somebody who has been defending Windows 8 since it came out as not that bad, really, this is the one feature that I cannot defend!

Disable the Windows Update and BITS (background intelligent transfer) services and reboot.
As well - you can have Windows 8.1 boot up to the desktop instead of the "win playstation side". I've been running it all year - and I can't remember the last time I was on the "play side".
As an added bonus, having the Windows updates service disabled (and BITS), you save yourself the headache of MS patches totally trashing your machine as per what's been going on lately. In my experience, it's better to patch a few days after the patch went out.... and doing so manually.
Google on having Windows 8.1 boot to desktop:

Hold on man 10s' a commin.
And we can complain anew then too.

Yep, waiting for that one...
Hopefully Win10 will be like Win7...
Vista reworked everything to add new capabilities and stability, but had a horrible GUI... Win7 fixed it.
8.0 reworked everything to add new capabilities and stability (?), but had a horrible GUI... Win8.1 tried to fix it, but failed miserably... Maybe Win10 will fix it properly.

No Start button. 'nuff said.

I think you mix something up.
a) Windows 8.1 has a start button (only the first Windows 8 release was missing one -- at least by default)
b) The only ones complaining about a missing start buttons are usually fanboys of X or haters of MS / Windows
|
|
|
|
|
c) Those of us who haven't found the option to reinstate the Start button yet.
