Sylvester Stallone is reported to have said that his ideal movie will have only one word in it: Yo.
Most Chinese king fu movies approach this. The entire dialog consists of "What do you want?" "Revenge".

Ditto. When I read the OP, I thought, although I love scifi, I have seldom really loved many sci-fi movies at all, purely as movies, then, just before I saw it mentioned, Alien popped into my head. You know, great minds....

Alien 4 (genetic engineering)

From the boiled down list it has to be Forbidden Plant.
From the other suggestions Alien, without the bloody 's'.

I'm not really able to pick a favorite one.. to name a few of my favorites, which maybe not everybody has heard about yet: Metropolis, Solaris, Stalker.
And for those who do know Metropolis already: Maybe it's new to you that since 2010 there's a "new" version which resembles the until then believed to be lost forever original version to about 95%, after a damaged print of the original cut was found in a museum in Argentina. So viewing it again might be interesting.

Shame it's being re-done though.

It depends what you class as "sci-fi". Both Triangle[^] and Timecrimes[^] were very good, but possibly more "thriller" than "sci-fi".
The Thirteenth Floor[^] and Dark City[^] are good examples of what The Matrix could have been, if it was any good.
Pontypool[^] probably strays too far into the "horror" category.

Timecrimes movie is really good in my book. My favorite in this genre. Triangle is also great. I love also Primer and newly. If you like Thirteenth Floor. Check the World on a Wire (original Thirteenth Floor from Germany). Thirteenth Floor is basically a remake but is different enough to warrant seeing the original. I would also recommend quite new Time Lapse reminds me of Primer and really funny Brazilian movie The Man from the Future (it says romantic comedy, but I would say time travel is pretty major plot in this movie).

The Abyss
Mad Max 2
Quatermass and the Pit
The Fifth Element
Brazil
Dark Star
The Matrix
Blade Runner

Of the Quatermas films/mini series, this is my favorite: Quatermas II [^]
I remember seeing this as kid and it frightened the crap out of me. Fortunately, there was a Morecombe and Wise on after it so all ended well.

Yep. The special effects were rubbish, and the acting was... Um... Stilted... But that meant they had to have a storyline that worked.
And scared the crap out of you as well...: thumbsup:

You are talking about Morecombe and Wise?
On that note, there was a comedy play a few years ago called "The Play What I Wrote" which was about those 2. It was elephanting hilarious.

Fantastic movie - I could watch it (and have) time and again.
And even just writing this I have the theme tune in my head!
