I may have deaded it. Goes through post boot "updating your system", gets to 10% and hangs.
Is there any way to stop the updates on boot?

Probably a bit late by then. Have you tried Safe Mode?
Bad command or file name. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaay...

Safe mode still tried to install the updates.

Just make sure you've got the re-install disk(s) handy first

With that title you must have a name that ends with 'is', like Dennis or pen...
Oops. Whatever, now you have the choice. Will it be Nagis, Vilmis or both?

Ouch! My wife's HP all-in-one did that a few months ago. After a few failed starts, (assuming Win8) it should trigger the advanced options for restoring/etc. The restore points in my case were useless and I had to rebuild it from scratch. Good luck!

I'm back at the beginning now, reinstalling everything. Maybe I'll wait and get my breath back before trying any more updates.

Since upgrading to Win 8.1, I found on a couple of occasions that restore points are generally useless. System Restore just reports a file "missing"! I now take a regular image of my systems drive, so at least I don't have to rebuild the whole frigging thing.
