Having been fat more than once my life... everyone knows how to lose weight. Being overweight is an emotional issue mixed with just years of bad habits. You change your habits, your emotions will change, your body will change.
I can tell you from experience that her chance of success in pulling it off will greatly increase if you do it as a team. Granted, you don't need to lose weight, but if you're sneaking in donuts it's just going to make her life and cravings harder.
Absolute worst thing is for her to feel alone in this change.

Not sure if the doctor gave y'all a plan, but it's worth mentioning that the honest MDs will tell you they're not nutritionists. And if you speak to a nutritionist, the honest ones will tell you they're not athletes (well some sure, but you get the idea). That is to say, you may or may not be getting the full picture from a single visit to just one person.
Not sure if you know all this stuff, if so... oops... then it'll be for someone else... but remember calories is a concept of the mind to approximate. They mean a lot less than you think. Your body's information system is chemicals and hormones. Calories is something we cooked up to sound smart. Don't take my word for it... according to traditional "science" it's about 3k calories per pound. So if you at 100 less caries per day and did nothing else... you'd think in 30 days you'd lose a pound. Nope. Never works that way. Ask anyone on a failed diet (ignoring water weight, etc. issues for the sake of simplicity here).
In short. it's hormones. Period. When you eat is just as important as how much you eat and what you eat. And the number one hormone being out of whack to cause weight gain is insulin. There are others like cortisol, but bare with me.
What is all this getting to? In short, calorie restriction can work but it's a mind-made concept that's an approximation of something you body has no concept of. It's just to make us feel good by pretending we understand something about the body we don't.
Focus on your meal timing and what's in the food first and foremost. Also, trigger new hormones with exercise. Yes, portion sizes too, but you can eat 20 bowls of cucumbers 5 chicken breasts a day and still lose weight - hormones.

Nuts and seeds get me through the day when there's nothing else. Protein shakes; there's now a vegan one that taste like vanilla (not bad).
Starvation diet: 800 calories per day (lying motionless).
1600 calories: "average"; 100-200 per hour.
Anything over that, you gain weight unless you up the activity level.
("Grazing" is the key; no "3 squares per day". And no carbs after 6:00 PM, when the metabolism slows down. And "breakfast is the most important meal of the day": (low fat) cottage cheese is the "perfect" food).

The whole point of fat is stored fuel for times of famine. We all know this, but somehow we don't think about this.
Starvation being defined here as going catabolic and your body starts eating itself to stay alive. A dude with 0% body fat will starve much, much, much quicker than dude with 50% body fat.

You just proved you didn't actually read my posts. I'm willing to bet money you have no idea what protein really is. You're the type to read just a little on a subject and think you're an expert. Whatever. All you accomplished was not learning from someone who's studied this topic for decades. Congrats... for nothing.

Also, and this is going to sound crazy, but it works. A lot of times fasting can be easier than a normal diet. Sometimes it's easier to turn the switch off, so to speak, than to change everything you put in your mouth all at once. I mean you should, but doing it all at once is a recipe for rebounds if you're addicted to garbage food.
No matter what hunger pangs someone may feel, if they are overweight, their body will survive when eating every other day for instance. That's the whole point of body fat... stored fuel... you just need to force your body to tap into it. And if your meal isn't perfect on your "on" day, at least you have a hormonal day off for your body to work with. Just make sure on your "off" day you drink nothing but water or black coffee etc.
Just another tool in the toolbox. It may not be for everyone. But it's an option.

I walk without fail, 2-4 miles a day. I never put off any chore, I do it the moment it needs to be done. I eat medium breakfast, small lunch and small dinner. Don't count calories, count steps. Have not lost a lot of weight, but I keep it off and keep it steady. Make herself walk with you, not a lot at first but little by little.

The only solution: eat until your BMI matches hers. Yours going up, hopefully herself's coming down.
Then you can both diet.

Not eating is an easy solution. Short term your body goes in starvation mode. Long term, you loose a lot more than just weight.
Your body works on an equilibrium of certain salts, and it requires a certain amount of vitamins and minerals. If you go below that, stuff gets bad.
There should never be a diet outside the hospital, or without their consent and help.
I'm not joking either, I lived that multiple times. Sometimes it is simply better to not diet

Eddy Vluggen wrote: Not eating is an easy solution. Short term your body goes in starvation mode. Long term, you loose a lot more than just weight. Nope. Yes, as you mentioned, you need salts/electrolytes, and getting in some minerals wouldn't hurt. But, but a 500 pound man not eating and a 100 pound man with zero body fat not eating are two different things.
Will the 500 pound man feel weaker? Yup. At first, but you'll adjust. Your body is trying to stay the same, you'll feel hunger pangs, glycogen will be used up in your muscles, liver, etc. And what's worse, you may go through withdrawals from certain foods, anything you had a food allergy to may also rise to the surface as your body detoxes itself naturally. But this isn't starving. After a week of zero food you'll feel great and the crap you used to eat will literally make you feel ill.
Starving is going catabolic and having your body literally eat itself to stay alive. Fat is stored fuel in times of famine. Most people call this starving simply because they don't want to stop eating and make up excuses for it. It's not. The bigger your fuel tank; the longer you can go.
It's also possible to refuel after a fast and fill your muscles back up with glycogen. Your body is a living thing. It's not static. Just don't make the mistake of drinking too much water. I learned that the hard way. Too much water with zero food will make you pee out any mineral content you do have. And that's bad juju.

Serious question, are you autistic or have Asperger's syndrome?
You have posted 8 times so far in this thread with long winded and detailed explanations expounding on your expert knowledge of all things fitness, medical and diet.
I have noticed that you exhibit this type of behavior in most of your posts to other threads.
It's alright if you are, I just want you to know that when you post like this, its a bit off-putting, and pushes people away from dialog with you, versus wanting to engage.

But, I've never been diagnosed, and I'm more in touch with reality than the average programmer on CP who never once deigned to leave their comfort zone of arguing online in a basement at home.
Slacker007 wrote: You have posted 8 times so far in this thread with long winded and detailed explanations expounding on your expert knowledge of all things fitness, medical and diet. I am an expert at this. I have the track record to prove. Unlike the other kids on CP arguing, I have experience.
And that's a good observation. I'm the type of dude that shuts up when I know little of a subject but you can't get me to shut up if I know a lot of about a subject. This is in direct contrast to most people who won't shut up on a subject they know little about. Granted, this can be considered subjective when "knowing a lot" is the metric used to speak of...
Slacker007 wrote: and pushes people away from dialog with you, versus wanting to engage.
Fair enough, but they're not engaging. They're arguing and are completely oblivious to the fact because most coders only ever hang out with other coders just as immature as they are.
I'll just say it like this. I've had way more than one MD conversation where they knew I knew WTF I'm talking about (in this instance). But I hop on CP and have to argue with these little kids when I know for a fact they're talking about of their arse.
The cold hard truth is, the more you actually study... the more odd you're going to seem. Especially to online kids with no actual experience.
I'll shut up now.

What you are preaching only stimulates bad eating habits and eating disorders. It is healthier to be overweight than to starve your body from resources, and no, there's no such thing a "detox".
Detoxifying your body is the task of your kidneys and liver. Guess what? They need calories to function. Weird as that may sound to you, but that hardware requires energy. If you starve, so does that hardware and your immune system.
Jeremy Falcon wrote: Just don't make the mistake of drinking too much water. So, your body sends you a signal of hunger, and you tried to ignore that with water?
Jeremy Falcon wrote: I learned that the hard way And you didn't think that maybe, just maybe, not eating is a retarded idea?
It is called "our daily bread"; because WE NEED IT DAILY.
It doesn't have to be fancy nor tasty. You don't have to like or enjoy it. And you do not have to agree with science; you have the freedom to be wrong on the subject. Just keep in mind, that encouraging people to not eat may kill a few of them. But still, you have the freedom to preach just that.
I'll be using my freedom to point out that such is a sickness that can be treated.

Eddy I stopped halfway through your post. You have no experience in this field and are just here to argue. Go study for a few more years on the correlation between fasting and detoxing (and yes that's a bit of a misnomer but let's not be pedantic).
