What about cutting on the "fitness classes"? They should enforce those! This lady is not the brightest light in the harbor.

Like a middle school kids. I wonder if this person (the CFO behind all this) who is definitely nor in engineering is getting a chromebook next.

How does one know when middle and senior management have no clue?
When they arrive at the office.

A VP at a former employer was shocked to learn that there was an average of more than one workstation/terminal per developer, so an edict was issued that the ratio had to be reduced to 1. Never mind that different components of our system had to be developed on different workstations/terminals and that quite a few developers worked on more than one component.
Someone with a brass pair then circulated a similar edict that there were far too many chairs, and that the ratio had to be reduced to 1. It anticipated and answered various questions, such as "What about conference rooms?" Here, the answer was that chairs without wheels would be retrofitted.
The workstation/terminal edict was quietly forgotten.

no, but it's funny. This is the one where one VP asks another, "hey, what's up big guy?" and the other answers, "I'm worried. Some of my decisions are coming back to haunt me." The other responds, "Don't worry, we'll schedule a re-org."

Shouldn't they shift their focus on printer paper rather than staplers? Printer paper necessitates the use of staplers, and they should cut down on the root rather than one branch of the cost-tree.
|
|
|
|
|
Surely they have no need for staplers, putting e-documents in their ultra-mega-secure cloud storage would totally be the way to go.

I always liked: "Times are tight, we have to cut out unnecessary spending".
Made me wonder if, when the economy picks up, could we restart unnecessary spending?

I always assume they don't and that is almost always correct. At least at previous employers it certainly was, especially the publicly-traded ones. When they actually DO have a clue it really stands out and is very obvious. It is also so rare that it is the exception, not the rule.

Another question.
How does one know when you have no clue?
It has been my experience that management usually does have the clues.
They just don't always share or want to share.
Paper clips, staples, staplers, printer paper are obvious tools of the job and cheap.
It's a poor worker who blames the tool. Not always true, but sometimes very near.
Need them and don't have them. Go out and buy some. They are cheap enough.
Just keep the receipts.

I once worked for a company with three owners and about four to five employees (including myself).
The three owners were new and bought the company from the previous owners, who made it into a small, but successful business with a good name in meat processing.
Needless to say, the new owners wanted to go in a new direction.
Where the previous owners were part of the workforce, the new owners saw themselves more as managers and "big picture thinkers."
So three "big shot managers" and four to five people having to earn all the money, things went downhill fast.
Three people with new plans needed A LOT of meetings.
Customers even started calling saying things like "I need [that owner], but he's probably in a meeting."
They were absent even for us, even though they were meeting in the next room.
So, after lots of meetings they decided it was time for a budget cut: no more lemonade and only house brand tea (instead of Pickwick).
I made a simple calculation and found that the tea would save about €10 a year and would upset coworkers and myself, but they were determined.
That €10 budget cut pushed me over the edge to search for a new job, which cost them A LOT more...

In both my experience (subjective) and in reason (objective), it is a mistake to have technology staff (e.g. software developers, engineers, architects, testers, etc.) report to non-technical management (e.g. those with no (or no current) hands-on technology experience).
It is far easier for an experienced technologist with a modicum of people skills to learn management, leadership, and business, than for a non-technical business type to become proficient enough in practical, applied technology. The intellectual horsepower needed for the technical exceeds the intellectual horsepower needed for business and management.
From the CTO (or it’s equivalent) on down, those in leadership should have a successful history as hands-on in their technology field, and retain enough hands-on work so as to stay current.
I use these terms because the principal applies beyond software engineering. Do you think Lockheed Skunkworks could have churned out the U-2 and SR-71 if they were not led at the top by an engineer? Can you imagine the outcome if some Ivy League MBA-type had run Skunkworks then instead of Clarence “Kelly” Johnson?

And another example is Admiral Hyman Rickover (an engineer) who created and led the US’ Naval Reactors (aka Naval Nuclear Power) for decades.
Naval nuclear power in the US, and copied by other nations, could never have happened and be so successful and safe had a non-engineering management-type tried to create that program.

Who uses paper and staples in this day and age?????
|
|
|
|
|
I do .
Every month I collect my expenses, fill out an excel file with them, and write myself a reimbursement check. Technically, as a business I have to keep them for 3 years in case the IRS would like to discuss matters. After having my own corp for 15 years it's a complete waste of effort but whatever. And yes, my stapler is red .
A few years back, I looked into s/w to scan receipts, etc. It was more work and $$ than it was worth.
