Discovery was good a few years ago, then it went WWII nuts you did have Mythbusters(!) but it went down hill, the same with History. I mean a Custom car show on History, Discovery maybe...

I agree that most series on History channel are boring, with one exception: "Black Sails".
But that just might be because I'm a bit of a pirate from Zeeland, har, har

The feared pirates from Zeeland tried to rob all my money when I was there on vacation. The first time was not so bad, mostly because I was not even in school yet, had no notable amounts of money and was more interested in catching crabs at the beach.
I have lived with several Zen masters - all of them were cats.

Then I can recommend this beach pavilion: [De Piraat]

Oostkapelle? Could have reached that on foot from Westkapelle, where we used to stay.

Update: not sure if this is a mistranslation by Google, or an accusation!
You stole your bike near the beach.
Lies! All lies! I was nowhere near at the time - whenever that was - and I can have witnesses to prove it!

No, that were the Germans, they always took our bikes (dates back to WWII)
I will see if I can find something on pirates from Zeeland, there have been a few, and don't forget that the Flying Dutchman came from Zeeland too (Terneuzen) !

Some famous privateers from Vlissingen were Nicolas Jarry and Pierre le Turc, more info here (Dutch only)

I would also like to mention that Mark Knopfler made a song about the subject:
Quote: Privateering we will go
Privateering, yo ho ho ho
Privateering we will go
Yo ho ho, yo ho ho

I love the Oak Island show and the Vikings show. I guess I am boring.

The wife and I like the Curse of Oak Island. It hooks you like Farmville or Mafia Wars, you keep watching them find boring things like old pieces of wood, just because every now and again they find something truly interesting, like 1,200 year old lead crosses. And of course we're waiting to see if they find the whole treasure before the seventh guy dies.
As for the oft-repeated variations on the phrase "could it be ...?", we find it amusing. We become Joel, Tom, and Crow watching Mystery Science Theater 3000 and mock the dude. It's a fun hour.

Hmm, you know they seed the lockers in Storage Wars, perhaps same here too?
Yeah I remember way back once watching when they found a piece of wood, oh man they got almost 3 full episodes of excitement out of that one. Woo hoo
And of course there's the "let's drain the swamp episode(s) each season [again again again]" - have they still not figured out that you cant drain a hole on a beach? (Even as a kid I figured out sand is like that.)
Sigh, funny the first couple of times but even as a schadenfreudian too much to bear.

It would not surprise me if they seed some nice 'finds' at Oak Island I suspect that if there ever was a treasure, it was found in 1795 by the three boys who originally discovered the 'money pit' and they spun a tale to make it seem it was still there, perhaps in an attempt at "security through disinformation." The reason the holes keep filling up is not because of clever traps engineered by the pirates/Knights Templar/Phoenicians/whoever but because they are digging below the water line, and act surprised when water begins to pour in. The majority of 'experts' they bring in to verify finds, or who bring them things that are supposed to be clues I find to be BS artists and fakes. For example, the one who determined purely through a photograph that the lead cross was really the Phoenician goddess Tanit and that it was 2,000 years+ old? Balderdash.
Still, it's an amusing show.

Not that I watch it, but isn't the History channel supposed to be the one with wall-to-wall WWII documentaries?

I liked the 'Nazi Megastructures' series, but that was on National Geographic channel I think ...

It hasn't been that for a long time. Hardly ever see an actual documentary on there any more.
After all, it has to be aliens, right?
|
|
|

Ok, anything called the "history" channel that talks about aliens needs to be blocked from the TV.
I had no idea it had gotten that bad.

It has. There is very little that resembles history any more.

So...the History channel nowadays has as much to do with history as Fox News is "fair and balanced"...?

Given the youngun's goming out of the mill these days those aren't "soft skills," for what I've seen lately those are definite "non skills" if not "unlikely to ever have skills."
