Hi All,
Wasn't really paying attention yesterday, Something was said about World Environment Day 'working' from home (which I can't due to needing hardware). I am pretty sure is next Tuesday, so where is everyone!
Hello, hello... anyone there! I'm sitting here on my own...

I should be a pure software developer, dealing with algorithms 90% of the time and UI the remaining 10%.
My first projects as an intern (no access to production code, only a bare minimum simulacrum) were revising our RS232 communication classes and implementing MODBUS protocol over RS232 and TCP/IP (for reasons we can't use external components). Thus I became the Communication Expert... the second project was piloting a device we never attached to our machines. Thus I became the Strange Devices expert.
Guess what I did most of my time in the past 6 years? I literally have more hardware on my desk than the blessed hardware engineer. I even got to be moved from the developer pen open space to the hardware lab.

Been there, done that. Have you acquired the strange soldering iron burns that cause havoc with finger print sensors yet?

No, I almost never solder as my circuits are so experimental (aka: nobody knows how The Thing™ should work or be assembled) that screw terminals, breadboards or insulating tape are my main tools.
The chip and board parts are firmly the hardware engineer turf, I work with industrial standards at 24V and several Ampere or more.

I did develop thick skin.
I do believe I acquired led poisoning in an earlier life as well.

Thick skin is a must, led poisoning ? Well after a day of messing with them the worst is a eye strain. Did you mean Lead poisoning...

Oh, right.
So it's still OK to do it this week then? Great!

I shutter when I say this but am thinking of upgrading to Windows 10 Pro from Windows 7 Pro.
I've searched for the last hour and am under the impression that I have to buy a fresh version of Windows 10 Pro as no upgrade exists? Could this be?

Not looking for the free upgrade, looking to buy the upgrade.

Yes, you need to buy the upgrade, and the free upgrade has passed (I believe).
I made the switch from Windows 7 to Windows 10 (with new PC), and I am quite happy now with Windows 10.
At first, Windows 10 was a nightmare, I have been told, but after a number of Windows 10 updates and patches, I think most of the big bugs have been taken care of.
Might I suggest though, that you get a new PC/laptop with your Windows 10, if possible. I don't know how Windows 10 will operate on the old hardware...if it is "that" old.

… and my proof of pudding corroboration:
With my old Acer I took the free upgrade from 7 Pro to 10 Pro and had no end of trouble. Finally the machine kept crashing to the point where I had to do two complete rebuilds within a week, coupled with multiple processor shut-downs due to overheating when running Hyper-V.
Solution - buy a new laptop - a top of the range HP gaming laptop (what the shop had in stock at the time) and the world changed. It is really stable and I have had no problems with it at all for four months. I have yet to try two VMs in Hyper-V, but I suspect it will be no problem.
