More specifically I need to send the WM_SHUTDOWN message to a single window in order to simulate the windows shutdown (the windows procedure is not mine and I don't have the sourcecode, it's a runtime that executes project files which are controllable via socket from other applications).
I would have used WinWatch of the memorable HardCoreVB suite but on Win7 64 bit it isn't an option. Does anybody know a tool to view all the top level windows and send individually messages to them? Programming solutions are ok but a "known functional" tool would be priceless.

Thanks to NirSoft I don't have that problem.
Very much thank you, this is already a workable solution!

Try in the right forum for starters.

It's not properly developement, I'm not looking for code, library or solutions but for a tool. And this one is definitely the most viewed place of the whole site, especially by the competent people.

Of course it bloody well is! SendWindowMessage(GetHwnd(), WM-, blah blah blah. It is a programming question and belongs in the right forum.
Bloody double standards, come on, wake up.

No, he wants a tool that will do it. Not the code. I see it as a technical discussion and much more interesting than what usually goes on in the Lounge.

Except that I was not looking for the windows API to do so but a tool, an application, that allowed me to see the handle of top level windows and send to exactly one of them a message - which I discovered does not exist by the way, it is WM_ENDSESSION.

Well know you know you need to write the tool yourself you can ask in the right forum!

And this is the right forum. To quote;
No flame wars, no abusive conduct, no programming questions and please don't post ads. It is NOT a programming question. If we take your reasoning, then ANY software-related question belongs in the C forum. After all, .NET is just a wrapper around some winapi's.

I was going to suggest archery equipment, byut Linux seemed more appropriate.

As it wasn't solved, feedback would be appreciated...
Clues:
Advantageous education in the midst of cure process (9)
An expert adds little education to cure process (9)
Solutions:
PROCEDURE = Process
PRO = Advantageous (as in "Pros and cons") or An expert
ED = (little) Education
C URE = cure
|
|
|
|
|
First clue was ok, but Pro for advantageous is a bit iffy ( I read pro as a good attribute not as advantageous )
An expert adds little education in cure process
would be better
Good effort though

Thanks for the feedback.
I agree advantageous wasn't great, but everything else I came up with for "pro" just seemed far too easy. I'm not trying to make them unsolvable, but I don't want them answered in 2 minutes either.
And I see what you mean about "in"... the alternate clue was a bit rushed on my part.

waaay too easy... so I didn't even bother

Would have preferred Professional instead of expert but that was not my issue.
It was the word "Cure". I did fathom to use the word as is. If you had used treatment then may be (just may be) would be nearer to solution.

Thanks for the feedback.
I haven't quite worked out how I feel about mixing plain text with encrypted yet (as in this instance). I agree it can be misleading, so it might be something for me to try and avoid in the future.

There is no rule that you should not use plain text. Its that, at least for me , the brain is conditioned in such a way that whenever I encounter CC, I tend to look for alternate word instead of pausing for a moment to consider the option of plain text.
