I was sick of hearing C level execs using this word and thinking I knew what it meant, so I double checked its definition.
I then realised that I had not known what the word meant - "the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects."
I also then realised that the definition of the word 'synergy' breaks the first law of thermodynamics.
So people who use this word are either geniuses or uneducated in science and don't understand the basic principles of physics.

You are incorrect.
The laws of thermodynamics were stuffed up when they created the story of Goldilocks and the 3 bears.
Big Daddy bear's porridge was too hot.
Mummy bear's porridge was to cold.
OK I can accept that.
However the little bowl with Baby bear's porridge was just right.
What nonsense.
I refused to tell my children that version of the story.
Refused to because of the laws of thermodynamics.
So my sentiments are with you completely.
However synergy is different.
It isn't about energy but about interactions and outcomes.
Sometimes quite complex interactions.
This is how i became interested in regression analysis.
Trying to think of an example....
Like how were one drug has this quantifiable effect and another has this quantifiable effect and the placebo has this quantifiable effect.
However if the two drugs are combined in a 4th group, and the effect is far greater than either of them alone, then that is synergy.
It is like an anti gestalt in a way, where normally the parts are greater than the whole, but in this case the whole is greater than the parts.
It is around us everywhere.
The laws of thermodynamics still stand.
Synergy is real and doesn't threaten any laws of physics at all.
However it is used as a buzzword and that is annoying as well.
Just saying.......

Blimey - I was just talking out of my arse, I know nothing about physics and didn't expect such a well thought out response.
Thanks!

You can get food in Taco Bell?!

A Gas-tronomical question if ever there was one!
But nacho fast: this begs the complimentary question: is a burrito a corn chip shivering from cold?

Halp! I've become a slave to naming and style guidelines.
Years of C++ development and years of development prior to advanced compilers and syntax highlighting and intellisense and doc-comments and all of that made me a fascist about it.
To the point where I judge people for not following, say, MS naming and style guidelines for .NET when building C# apps.
To the point where I usually kick myself for not putting constants before vars in equality comparisons if(0==foo), etc.
I already smoke pot (it's legal here) so how do I loosen up? Y'all don't need my judgment.
Nor do any fellow devs. And I need to be able to use other people's code without feeling a little sick about it, or wanting to refactor it before I touch it.
I'm half serious about this post.

your style sucks, so does mine, oh and that bloke over there: his style sucks too.
each to their own.
If style is an issue you've got a lot more growing up to do.

Is that 1TB or 1TiB?

All coding styles suck. But it's important that everyone in a project is using the same general style to keep the code readable. When available I prefer platform standards/IDE autoformat defaults. (And yes that means I use different brace placement styles in C# and Java.)
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

There is only one (sensible) standard:
The code can be read by another programmer without needing a decoder-ring - consistent with it's own standards and the intent of being informative to not only ones self, but with others who cares to look at the code.
Consider that, even for a given language, a different type of project can be best served by code that is emphasizes its constructs as plainly (and maintainable) as possible.
Also, if it's VB6, just chop off their hands.
