I have received a phishing email that looks very well produced.
I'm tempted to spin up a virtual machine and go to the link inside of it just to see what happens.
Do you think there is any malware that can escape a virtual machine?

Nothing escapes from a virtual machine. Once the malware passes the event horizon, it is reduced to pure energy by the time it reaches the singularity. Wait... that was a black hole, not a virtual machine. Better install everything on a black hole then.

It has been done: Escaping VMware Workstation through COM1[^]
And even if this security hole is fixed now, I wouldn't bet on it.
Remember that your virtual machine is sharing the processor and local network as well.

You're right. I will follow Richard's advice and use one of those investigative sites instead.

I have no idea. but to be on the safe side: I suggest you make an image of your systems drive, before dipping your toes in potentially toxic waters.

I agree. I won't really do it.

No "old" computer in your attic?
There used to be a time when I would simply click on it, because a decent MVPS host file blocks most, and a lot of malware leaned on downloading files and have the user click on the "Run" dialog instead of Save. Fire up fiddler2, and go.
With the current state of webbrowsers, I'm not that confident. If you still interested in doing so, use the Lynx browser to navigate there.

Excellent point! I didn't think of that.

Yeah, it's more likely to be a problem if the machine--whether an old box you don't care about or a VM--is on a network.
|
|
|

You could also spin up a vm in the cloud.
