Thanks, very interesting.

Wow, how could I have frequented this site for so long and miss that forum!
Yes, that's pretty much it. I've unsubscribed from DailyNews because I noticed it just took up too much of my time. But sometimes, when I have the time, I wondered what's going on everywhere in the world.
Getting the Daily News as a pull rather than a push service would have been nice - but I guess that forum works just as well.

"A computer".
Can that computer be your own, running that software offline, disconnected from the rest of the world, and with all so-called "telemetry" disabled...?

I think you are up again tomorrow Paul - all I've got is an x or y in the clue

Difficulty??
It has 10 characters. Y is the variable. Phobia is fear and there is two F for gods sake.
I am up tomorrow?
cheers,

Well it's possible.
But not with that solution!

Correct, but out of time: 2 minutes past the four hours I'm afraid.

But ... what's two minutes between friends? You can have the job tomorrow if you want it - just let me know!

Having fiddeled with Java (specifically JavaFX) for a few weeks, yesterday I ran into a problem that I just could not solve, regarding signaling between threads. I checked dozens of suggestions by Google that just did not pan out. So I took a deep breath, opened a Stack Overflow account and posted the question there. Horrors! A CP member asking questions on SO? Stone the heretic!
However, within an hour a *real* Java expert posted a complete mini-project showing how my problem can be solved. I was very impressed, since he obviously wrote the mini project in response to my question.
Confession: I may use SO again! I'll get my coat.
I am not wrong. I am just different!

Your experience is not the same as mine. The responses to my questions (I've asked two) were neither useful nor polite.
I use information on SO if it comes up in search results, but I don't bother asking questions.

I found one of the moderators to be very rude. I was going to tell him what he could do to himself but refrained.

No, I didn't know it was possible, and it's been far too long now.

My first question was marked as a duplicate. It wasn't; I even linked to the original question, and explained how my situation was different. My question remained closed, and no one could provide an answer even if they wanted to.
My second question, submitted a couple of years later, was summarily deleted with no answers. I received an email stating my account was blocked for submitting useless or irrelevant questions.

It's a different crowd on there for sure. Good luck posting questions from a newly created account; if they accept it at all, your question has to be really unique, and the moderators have to feel like it's relevant.
I suppose that's why "copy and paste from SO" has become a meme - because they've put so much work into it, it's easy to find answers. But it's a terrible site to post your own questions if you're just getting started (and they're not exactly going out of their way to help along the noobs - I just don't bother anymore).

It's unbelievably ironic that's their value metric for questions. It's the exact opposite of what a site should look for if they're wanting to help people solve problems.

Not to come to their defense, but I see where they're coming from. There would be a lot more noise if their forums were a complete free-for-all. By being heavily moderated, the noise is cut down and it's a lot easier to find answers. But again, at the cost of making it difficult to ask a question. And I don't think they really care about trying to find the right balance.
