I decided not to vote this election, mainly due to despair at the Tories' failure to run a proper Conservative government. The alternatives are too awful to contemplate and we all know what is in store for us over the next five years. I doubt that my X will be missed.

Apathy is the main problem over here Richard - the current government's track record is beyond appalling , Liz Truss should be in the tower with Boris - oops just remembered the no politics in the lounge rule.

Isn't there an option called NOTA (None Of The Above) on the ballot paper? We have such an option in India.
Once NOTA gets above a certain threshold percentage of the votes, then there will be re election (hopefully with a different set of candidates).
|
|
|
|
|
Not here. You can actually spoil your ballot by writing such on the paper, or vote for every candidate. But that does not have any real effect on the outcome.

Was introduced in India about 10 years ago, as an electoral reform. Not sure whether it has made any big difference till now. But at least, there's such a choice for the voter.
The Constitution of India allows any citizen to contest, and it is interesting to see that a number of candidates get lesser than NOTA itself.

I didn't know you had that in India - very sensible.

I figure that if you don't vote then you lose the right to complain about the government you do get. So get out there and - or spoil your ballot.
Personally, I'd like to see a compulsory "none of the above" option at the bottom of all ballots. If it wins the seat, nobody is elected and everybody on the ballot is banned from public office for ten years. If "None of the above" wins the whole election, you have to restart with new candidates until we get ones the voters trust ...

Japan declares victory in 'war' on floppy disks[^]
I had no idea anyone was still using them (or that any still worked!) let alone that a government agency would require submissions on them. I haven't even had a floppy disk drive in any computer this century, and use the A: drive for network storage.

I just got a SMS to say that they would be delivering a parcel to me between 07:24 and 10:24 today - which is fine, I understand the need for a reasonably sized delivery window.
Only thing is that it's 08:50 now, so the message is telling me that they could deliver the parcel an hour and a half ago ...
I guess it's better than the usual message "We'll update the tracking once we've delivered the parcel" which is all they give you once they have received it into their system. Just not much. Computer systems don't seem to be their forté - Horizon anyone?

I had a parcel coming via FedEx "Express" a couple of weeks ago. They said it would be delivered on Friday before 10pm, which was fine. About 3 'o'clock Friday afternoon they sent an email saying it would now be delivered the following Monday before 10pm; OK, they don't work weekends. On Monday morning I received an email saying it would now be delivered on Tuesday before 10pm. Well, Tuesday we were off to the Cornwall for a few days so I had to redirect it to a local collection point. Tuesday morning I got a message confirming that it would be delivered to said point, on Wednesday! When I arrived at the hotel later on Tuesday and checked my email I discovered it had been delivered that day (Tuesday) before we left home. Fortunately it was nothing urgent.

I needed a part to sort out a telly problem in our social club. I would imagine the parcel ought to be small enough to go through a letter box. So I told them to deliver it there, rather than come to me first.
I also included full details of opening times in the delivery instructions section.
Yesterday's "We attempted delivery" message was timed at 7:05pm, when the Club was open.
So how exactly can you fail to deliver to an open boozer when even the lamest of buffoons must be able to see the lights on the the people inside?
Do delivery drivers perhaps have some vampire blood and are unable to cross the threshold unless invited?

I can kinda understand that - if you get filmed going into a boozer in delivery uniform and then driving away, Tiktok isn't going to assume you were dropping off a small parcel!

I have my own IoT ecosystem, and often when I add to it I feel a little guilty.
Because half the time I am not creating something that's never been done. It's just never been done my way, or on the particular platforms I target, or whatever.
All of my touchpad drivers operate the same way, using the same basic interface. That was worth it to me to create drivers that were like that, so I could easily port my code to all the different IoT devices out there.
My graphics library was the first to support TrueType fonts on IoT and embedded without megs of PSRAM. My graphics library is still the only one to support SVG (yes, the graphical web technology) on the same. That was worth it to me.
I also try to defend it to myself before I make it. I just don't know if my reasons are rationalizations.
Particularly when my dependency graph on a typical project looks like this:
Dependency Graph

|-- htcw_esp_lcd_panel_ili9342 @ 0.2.0

Chrome, then they wouldn't allow AdBlock so I went back to FF, which I had used for years.
Then I start having problems getting links to work, I was getting a lot of "That site can't be reached" errors so I went to Edge to see if it was a browser issue. I was still getting errors!
Turned out to be with the Server 2019 I have as a file server here at the house. For some reason it started having DNS issues and when I set my Windows 11 machine back to using Auto DHCP it cleared every up and it is now working for FF.

Eh? I run Chrome and have never had a problem with AdBlock - or at least uBlock - except with YT who have been running a blocker war for a year or two now*
Chrome has never refused to run it, and it "just works" with whitelists for sites like CP.
* YT appears to be losing, with updates within hours of them changing it - and the number of people who use ad blockers going up because they had never heard of them before YT started trying to ban them ...
