In order to eliminate advertising, the Internet will have to transition to a "pay per view" model. This may have worked for cable TV vs broadcast TV, but has not worked so well on the net.
(Applications such as Hulu, Netflix, etc. excepted)

There's no need to eliminate advertising, but it's been turned into the main focus of the Internet.
Even people who would have just opened a geocities site in the past immediately fire up accounts with the google advertising mob, before they've even written any original content.
Advertising isn't what the Internet was invented for, so it shouldn't be the Internet's main focus.

The shutdown comes in response to news that Facebook has been using Apple’s program for internal app distribution to track teenage customers with a “research” app. One of those battles where I can't decide who I want to lose (more)

I was waiting for the zinger: Apple discovered this when they called Facebook and before Facebook answered, Apple heard them say, "don't tell them about our certificate use."

Apple is just apple, but fb is once again abusing the Internet in ways that would cause national uproar if a government did it.

I expected a "it wasn't out intention" remark and instead got this:
Quote: internally referred to as 'friendly fraud' Is Facebook in a pissing contest with Google to see who can be the most evil? Seems that Twitter wants in as well.

I don't know about in-game charges, but I'd like to see serious charges brought against fb.

Agreed.
I’m in the middle of “Bad Blood” tight now (about Theranos), and I can’t help but wonder just how much of the deceit and greed also applies to FB, Twitter, etc. Certainly the hubris does.

I am reading Bad Blood too and it's a fascinating story, it does look like Holmes is probably going to go to jail for what she did given her recent depositions that can be found somewhere on youtube(apparently some 600 or so "I don't know" answers to simple questions about what was going on in Theranos at the time).
Certainly Apple have not been too honest with its customers when they previously explained that customers were holding their devices incorrectly, in order to explain reception issues.

It would be a total miscarriage of justice if Lizzie Borden Holmes didn't do serious jail time.
I'll have to pick up a copy of that book.
