When I wrote a similar piece of code, I vaguely remember the event firing everytime the number of missed calls change. It fires when you get a missed call (missedcall count = 1) and fires when you go to the missed calls window (missedcall count = 0). Look into the BackgroundWorker class of the (?)System.Diagnostic namespace. It will create a thread that will do all of the database work, and provide a percentage property so you can control a progress bar.
